fighting just to fight

Sometimes I am at a lost for what to do in the game, I can only shoot so many npcs before I get bored, but recently I decided I needed to liven things up a bit. So I parked the big ship and rigged up an adder for combat, only 90k rebuy. Then I went looking for a fight. I only interdicted players who I thought could put up a fight and I had an absolute blast. A particular viper pilot put up a great fight, it was a slugfest, but I eventually made him turn tail and run, he almost burnt me to a crisp on several occasions. I wish more people would take a little time out from the grind and just fight for the sake of just fighting. I got turned to space dust a couple of times, I took on an FDL for laughs, he must have thought "an adder? Really?" Haha. It's all in good fun. My goal is to take down an Asp with my adder, I need to work on my combat a little more for that.

Well the high rebuy cost is what preventing pvp action. 90k rebuy is nothing, losing 1kk in a vulture in a couple of minutes? Or way more when flying an FdL or python.
Most people are using their best ship 99% of the time. Sure i can get a viper and have fun without risking too much money, but it will be a pure pvp ship sitting in 1 system and never leave... Not the best idea.

I think it would not be a bad idea to keep a couple of burner ships stored around the more populated areas, you don't really have to spend much. Good way to let off some steam.

Set up a combat viper for the action in volungu. Plenty of pvp there atm!

I think it would encourage people to use more ships and generally "goof around" a bit more if there was some (possibly limited) ability to switch commander location to ones other ships without having to physically fly there.

This for me would help a lot in terms of getting out and doing other stuff for fun....but as it stands I'm busy with one or another thing most of the time to be bothered to do such a thing :)

No Role play. No immersion. No imagination. Just mindless pew-pew. How depressing. :(

It shows why this game either needs a proper separate arena mode or, if it wants to be world of tanks in space, a proper matchmaker. PvP, we were told, was going to be meaningful. Now you're attacked because other players are bored. Fix please frontier.

This type of play doesn't have to be without immersion or meaning. Everyone I interdicted was either on the way to one of the combat zones or leaving a combat on the way to the station in Volungu. So, immersion is not necessarily missing, it just allows more reckless behavior.

I'm often tempted just to Sidewinder up and go looking for a brawl around the Lave area etc.
When I get a bit of downtime from movie making, etc, I may just do that! :D

really... goof around? if a player wants to PvP why not just go to a CG warzone and pick the losing side?

Here in lies the issue causing the divide however imo. 50% of people playing what they want to be an immersive spaceman sim, where getting blown up is something to avoid at all costs if possible, and 50% of people wanting an arcade shooter to just blast people.

I really truly hope FD never add multiple CMDR slots for this very reason.

Have you tried Gaijin's Star Conflict? that seems much better suited for this imo

Unfortunately I have found this to be the general mantra for most Player based fun in this game: pirating, bounty hunting, duelling. All requires considerably amounts of funds to finance.
Not going to happen with the current insurance system. "Pay to have fun" never works.

Yes this ^

That would be awesome to have a special arena with reduced insurance costs. …

I think a combat simulator at every bigger station would be very, very cool. Players could fight each other (they don't have to be at the same station), no insurance cost involved. There could be some ranking system or maybe just for fun combat. There could be different class modules (like Sidewinder only or only certain weapons or just a few ships to select from or what ever ship you want module). It would be very cool if it would allow player sponsored competitions with rewards.
And the winner will get a flight over London with fireworks (I think that's mentioned in "Dark Wheel").

There could be a "test drive" module at the shipyard so CMDRs could test the ship they want to buy before they buy it.

This +1.

I am surprised the first response to this thread wasn't "Go find a conflict zone (And make it a "high" one if your really bored) and pick the weaker/losing side. You will have plenty of action AND you will be adding to the simulation instead of turning the game instance you occupy into a pew pew fest.

And +1 on this as well.

Yeah, much harsher penalties for killing clean pilots outside of anarchies coupled with a no rebuy cost arena mode for people who just want to get their PvP on would go a very long way toward alleviating the tension between PvE and PvP players IMO.

Fix what? There is nothing broken here. Even if arenas were set up (and I'd have no problem with this - there could be particular locations you travel to purely for this purpose, which wouldn't affect anything else), it wouldn't prevent anyone doing anything outside the arena (and nor should it). The main point of Elite is you play it how you want to within the bounds of the game. That allows huge scope, which includes what the OP wants to do - and this is a good thing. I'm all for adding more features (arenas could be fun), but they should be additional features rather than something to be used to prevent existing mechanics from working. If someone wants to pull other ships from supercruise and attack them, why should they be stopped from doing this? Or have I missed something? :)
