The Fighter (2010) CERT 15

The Fighter, is a drama about boxer "Irish" Micky Ward's unlikely road to the world light welterweight title. His Rocky-like rise was shepherded by half-brother y, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded in life after nearly being KO'd by drugs and crime.

Daybreakers (2009) CERT 18
Thu 16 May, 9:00pm On Channel 5
In a world 10 years into the future, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires' food supply - human blood - is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society's needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form.

I've not included a closing date for the poll but I'll be watching whatever's in the lead by Wednesday afternoon.

If anybody sees anything else worth watching on telly they can stick it in this thread as well.

Tonight (Sunday) 9:30 BBC2 - The Fantastic Mr. Feynman.

Daybreakers was actually a pretty decent movie. Don't view it as just a vampire flick as it's a lot more than that. Sure it has it's fangs and blood moments, and a few other surprises as well, but it touches on a lot of other aspects that you'd see in more mainstream movies.

You won me over Nicodemus. But we're now in a dead heat situation, with only "In the Line of Fire" trailing behind. Poor Clint.

Heh, I only hope you enjoy it. Have to admit I went into the cinema to see it expecting the worst and coming away somewhat surprised. That doesn't mean though that you might not find it a complete pile of tosh though :D

Edit: I'm not voting for a film this week as I won't be around to see the one I'd choose.. but I'll be saving Daybreakers onto the digibox for later viewing.

Ach go on and vote anyway.. No one is under any obligation to watch the movie they vote for. The only thing is that the winning film can get talked about here without anyone complaining about spoilers.

Congratulations to Daybreakers for winning the "What should we watch?" poll. Not only did it win only the slimmest margins of a single vote, it managed to romp home with double the votes of anyone else.

I'll get my PVR set tonight. Looking forward to watching the movie.

I had to do it. :D

How did you manage to vote twice? This week was slim pickings, Maybe that's why the turnout was even less than for a local election. But I didn't want to pick anything too far way from Thursday.

I hope you get a better turnout for your poll this week.

Only halfway through Daybreakers, but really enjoying it. I'm loving the very very dark humour; the test subject given the blood substitute, the reaction to it, and the explosive effects of their efforts to stabilise him.

A good time to be watching a movie like this when the big oil companies are getting investigated by the EU for price fixing. Sam Neil makes a good executive vampire.

Sam Neil is very underrated in my books...
Event Horizon ok poor
BUT In The Mouth Of Madness was an amazing lower budget movie

It is a really surprising film. I was expecting a total fang fest when I saw it at the cinema but was very very surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it. It really is a different type of vampire movie. Hopefully you enjoyed the rest of it too.

Oh yes! I loved the way in which the twist in the tail was telegraphed to you to make it obvious, and then the effect of the cure working through the vampire strike force and how they started to feed on themselves.

The only small part I didn't like, something so trivial that it in way affected my enjoyment, was the way in which Vince Colosimo behaved at the end of the film. He would understand why Ethan Hawke would want to revert to human, but he had developed the substitute blood. It would be nicer if he'd explained to his friend that they could now have the immortality without their food supply problem.

Sam Neil is what made "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" worth watching. I liked the bit when he realised that Chevy Chase was in the room with him.
