Filter out passenger missions when the destination dock is too small to land at

Theres is already a mechanism that stops you accepting missions that you dont have cabin space for, however you can accept missions and load up the people only to find you cant actually land at the destination dock which is pretty frustrating. If you havent visited a system previously then you cant see its too small until you arrive using only the ingame tools

Look in the mission description.

OP

Have you ever actually taken a passenger mission you couldn't complete because of pad size?

Even if I take a passenger mission from an Outpost, it always goes to a large pad facility.

I've always thought this was bizarre and basically made small/medium sized passenger ship[s basically useless with perhaps the exception of the Robigo run.

Where have you found missions to small/medium pad destinations?

I'd really like to check them out.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi GJ51, yes thats what prompted me to make the suggestion. The log entry above is from the mission i received from "Hardwick Station" in the "Procyon" system. Its to take 18 tourists (bulk) to "Avogadro Enterprise" in the "Tau Ceti" system. I was in a type-7 and the dock at "Avogadro Enterprise" is only medium so i had to abandon the mission once i got there

i always thought the size of you ship dictated what missions you can take.mmmm ill have a look at this its not ringing right to me. hope im wrong, but dont think so.

i also thought the same and was frustrated to find it not the case regarding dock size - hence making the suggestion.
The size doesnt appear in the description and you cant see the stations in unvisited systems meaning theres no in-game way to identify if you're being given a mission you cant complete. Other missions get greyed out if you dont have the appropriate cabin type, cargo capacity etc so i think its an oversight that destination dock size isnt treated the same

Well you see, what happens is, people see a mission they have a ship that's to big for and they take it, then swap to a smaller ship to complete the mission. If you filter out missions the ship is to big for then people will only see half, or fewer, of the missions and complain that they can't see all the missions available at the station without first having to swap to a medium or small ship. So we will then get people demanding to see all the missions at the station regardless of the ship they are flying and let them accept them and to put the pad size in the mission description (which I believe it is, never done a passenger mission but I am sure it's in for other missions). That way they can accept the mission then swap to the correct ship and complete the mission.

Passenger missions have the problem that once you've loaded the passengers onto your ship, there's no way to put them on a different ship (and even if there was, you'd have to be fairly lucky to already own a medium ship with the right cabin configuration). So if you take a mission to what turns out to be an outpost in a large-pad ship, you can't correct that.

Even with the depot, cargo missions have a similar problem: you can load more mission cargo into your large ship than any of your mediums can carry, so then you can't dock at the station or swap to the medium ship, because there's no way to put the surplus mission cargo back into the depot. Those, at least, you can dump some of the cargo and still get a partial success on the mission.

The only other mission type that sends you to a station you aren't already docked at is data courier, and that's fine - you can swap ships freely, or even take an Apex if you own Odyssey, and complete the mission that way.

(From memory, on the non-passenger board, you do get prevented from taking missions to outposts: they appear on the board, but in red as "pad too small")

Thanks Ian - you beat me to it with the explaination about not being able to transfer passengers, nor outfit another ship while you have them. This is what makes me feel this is a bug or oversight - i was left with no option to complete the mission as soon as i'd loaded the people up

Surely you can take the mission but not load the passengers, doesn't it work like any other cargo mission? You don't have to load the cargo right away.

It does not, and indeed it differs from cargo that way; one has to seat every single passenger before accepting a passenger mission!

Yes, you manually assign the passengers to the cabins after accepting the mission. The issue is that at this point you dont know the destination dock is too small to land the current ship at, theres been no indication in the mission brief and if you havent visited the system previously you cant check in advance of getting there as unvisited systems dont let you view a system map. You cant unload or transfer the passengers once they're in so effectively as soon as you've loaded them, the mission is doomed - you'll be forced to abandon it when you get to the other end and discover the dock size
