Final Carnivora Pack List

I've seen the comment here a couple of times, fairly, that carnivora (that is, the mammal family containing cats, dogs, bears, weasel etc etc) is over-represented in the game as it stands.

So, in this scenario, there will be one pack containing carnivora and then there will never be any more, but the pack will be designed to give a good spread. So: which would you pick for the following cateogry:

1 x Cat species
1 x Dog species
1 x Bear species
1 x Hyena species
1 x Mustelid species (ie. weasels, otters, badgers, wolverine, ferrets etc)
1 x Seal species
1 x Other (Mongooses, Civets, Gennets, Linsang, Racoons, Skunks, Coatis, Fossa and so on)

My own votes for the record:
  • Leopard
  • Maned Wolf
  • Sloth Bear
  • Brown Hyena
  • Sea Otter
  • Elephant Seal
  • Coati

Which brings current scores up to the following. For this aspect not counting "replaced votes" just to keep things fair.

  • Leopard - 13 (Amur leopard most specificied)
  • Ocelot - 3
  • Pallas Cat - 1
  • Serval - 3
  • Sand Cat - 1
  • Caracal - 1

  • Maned Wolf - 19
  • Racoon Dog - 1
BEAR
  • Sloth Bear - 2
  • Spectacled Bear - 10
  • American Black Bear - 5
  • Tibetan Blue Bear - 1
HYENA
  • Brown Hyena - 2
  • Striped Hyena - 7
  • Aardwolf - 3
MUSTELID
  • Sea Otter - 1
  • Wolverine - 9
  • Asian Short-clawed Otter - 9

I don't think we need anymore seal species so I'll give it's spot to 2xother
Like so:

Amur Leopard
Maned Wolf
Andean Bear
Striped Hyena
Wolverine
Ring Tailed Coati
Fossa

Edit: I completely forgot that we still miss a Leopard in game. So Ocleot is kicked

Being realistic in what I've seen at zoos, this is my list:
  1. Ocelot
  2. Maned wolf
  3. American black bear - honestly, I've never seen a spectacled bear anywhere, besides ZT2
  4. Striped hyena
  5. Asian small clawed otter
  6. Harbor seal
  7. Raccoon

I'll tweak the requirements a bit for my purposes, I hope that's okay.
  • 1 Felid
  • 1 Canid
  • 1 Bear
  • 1 Viverroid (hyenas, civets, mongeese, etc.)
  • 1 Mustelid
  • 1 Procyonid (raccoons, coatis, etc.)
  • 1 Pinniped (seals, sea lions, walrus)
Anywho, here's my pickings for what I'd send off as the last carnivorans
  • Pallas's Cat
  • Maned Wolf
  • Spectacled Bear
  • Fossa
  • Fisher
  • White-nosed Coati
  • Walrus

Yes carnivores are common in Planet Zoo but they are also some of the most iconic and popular zoo animals, and thus are very common in zoos. Other than the ridiculous choice of Himalayan brown bear as a second brown bear subspecies, which carnivores in the game do people find unnecessary? Unfortunately in both reality and virtual reality people find many ungulate species boring. There has been a massive reduction in the diversity of ungulate species held in zoo collections over the past several decades. There is still a huge lack of primates species in the game, but this seems to be a deliberate choice on behalf of Frontier as they would require a lot more work on the animation end to do them justice, versus mass producing quadrupeds.

1) Ocelot - South America is the most sadly neglected continent in the game. The ocelot is wide-ranging and lives in many habitats and is common in captivity making it a very versatile choice.
2) Leopard - Personally I would prefer the Persian leopard. It's the most common subspecies in captivity after the Amur, has a unique pale coloration, and hails from a very unrepresented region of the map. (I'll include this cat in place of a second hyena. I am not sure why out of all the families in carnivora you singled out Hyaenidae as needing a second representative.)
3) Maned Wolf - South American, visually stunning and unique. No brainer.
4) Spectacled Bear - @darthquell more common in captivity than the Sun bear in both North American and Europe; its also far more common than the Asiatic black bear in North America. It is evolutionary and visually very distinct from the species already in the game. The North american black bear is essentially the Asiatic minus the emblematic white blaze. Plus for anyone living almost anywhere in North America the black bear is very "non-exotic" - not something I pay money to see in a zoo.
5) Asian-small clawed otter.
6) I agree with Markiz; we don't need another pinniped, let alone a seal. I would have preferred the Habour seal to the Grey seal, but I certainly wouldn't add it now. A sealion + a seal is good representation for a ZOO game. If this category has to be a marine mammal I would choose a Sea Otter. If not I choose the Marbled Polecat for diversities sake.
7) Fossa.

I don't think we need anymore seal species so I'll give it's spot to 2xother
Like so:

Amur Leopard
Maned Wolf
Andean Bear
Striped Hyena
Wolverine
Ring Tailed Coati
Fossa

I’ll stick to your picks since they are really perfect 🤩

Amur Leopard
Maned Wolf
Andean Bear
Striped Hyena
Wolverine
Ring Tailed Coati
Fossa

I would also like to add 2 of my African favourites:

Serval
Afican civet

I will have to disagree. While it's true that I wouldn't count it as exotic (I live in Texas), they are just as important as any other bear, as a southern bear from NA. Having some representation for your local area is what many zoos do. Plus, what's not exotic here is exotic elsewhere.
Unlike other bears, they have many different color variations and subspecies that are different colors entirely (spirit bears and cinnamon bears).

I must say that I would like to have more carnivoras than just 7 but taking the rules I would choose:

1. Amur Leopard
2. Maned Wolf
3. Spectacled Bear
4. Stiped Hyena
5. Asian Small Clawed Otter
6. Walrus
7. Fossa

I was using seal as shorthand for pinniped, and I think there's still room for distinctive species - walrus, leopard seal, ribbon seal, the elephant seals, fur seals etc would all be pretty distinctive from the 2 we have, but ultimately this was purely an exercise in fun, your options are totally fine too!

I don't want this to happen or even think it should happen, but:

Amur leopard
Pallas's cat
Maned wolf
Spectacled bear
Asian small-clawed otter
Ratel
Fossa

Knocking out big wishlist animals but replaced the pinniped slot with a second mustelid because, as I've said before, I'm actually against having a walrus due to their various problems in captivity (and being phased out of captivity in general outside of Russia, which is not the best place for animal welfare unfortunately). The grey seal and California sea lion cover the pinniped bases just fine on their own. Also sacrificed the striped hyena for one more small feline, though that was a harder call.

1 x Cat species - Amur Leopard
1 x Dog species - Maned Wolf
1 x Bear species - American Black Bear
1 x Hyena species - Aardwolf
1 x Mustelid species - Asian Small Clawed Otter
1 x Seal species - Harp Seal
1 x Other - Raccoon

If we were able to mix/match I would definitely take out the Aardwolf and add a second mustelid with the Wolverine though. But a second otter is in my triumvirate of "Must Haves" so it has to be the one I picked.

2 x Cat species (I have no desire for more seals) - Amur Leopard, Pallas cat
1 x Dog species - Maned Wolf
1 x Bear species - American Black Bear
1 x Mustelid species - Asian Small Clawed Otter
2 x Other (so many fall under other, and we already have a hyena)- Raccoon, Fossa

If I had room I would add a spotted skunk, ratel, black footed ferret, caracol, ocelot, ring-tailed coati, and tanuki, but that would be a whole other list.

  • Sand Cat
  • Maned Wolf (or Common Raccoon Dog)
  • Tibetan Blue Bear
Oso azul tibetano.JPG

  • Striped Hyena (or Banded Mongoose)
  • Black-footed Ferret (or Yellow-throated Marten)
turón patinegro.jpg

  • Ringtail
Ringtail.jpg

  • Southern elephant seal (or Walrus)

Not interested in hyenas and seals so I'll add 2x cat species and 2x other species.

  • African leopard
  • Caracal (or any other cat)
  • Maned wolf
  • American black bear
  • Wolverine
  • Ring-tailed coati
  • Fossa

We already have good seal, hyena and bear representatives, so I'll do 1 more cat, 1 more mustelid and 1 more other species instead.
  • Amur Leopard
  • Caracal
  • Maned Wolf
  • Asian Small-clawed Otter
  • Yellow-throated Marten
  • South American Coati
  • Fossa

I will play along
Any leopard: currently no true leopard in game and is a new part of the felines
Manned Wolf: seems everyone agrees, South America doesn’t have a canine and we could include a new canine
Spectacled bear: South America could use a bear.
Aardwolf
Wolverine
For a pinniped, I’d pick either a walrus or elephant seal. While there are many unique seal species, many of which just don’t seem cool enough to be included.
Coati
