Finally! A Clipper! Now what?

After years of playing ED my "childhood dream" of owning a Clipper (well, at least being able to buy one) is finally a reality.

However, due to the obvious time needed to rank, I already have an A-rated Anaconda, A-rated Python, all the T-ships, and a couple of others. Been looking at the Clipper fit-outs at the Corolis site but...

At this stage of my career, besides Imperial panache and the ability to bask, the Clipper is not a step up from my current ships. If you are a multi-ship owner (with money) what are you using your Clipper for?
Is there some special niche spot for it that I am missing?

Now you can earn enough credits with your Clipper to do anything in the game...

Or prepare for anything in the game...

Winter is... aw frig it.

I find it to be the most enjoyable ship in the game. It's not the best ship by a long shot (my FdL is a much better combat ship, the Python is a better multirole, it only has an average jumprange), but with it's speed and handling I just enjoy flying it so much more than any of the other ships.

So I'd say give it a try, fit it out and engineer it as a combat multirole and see if you fall in love with it as I did.

Do you already have a mining ship? Clippers are excellent miners.

I used mine as my main multirole ship for quite a while. Although I'll concede that other ships are better for that if you don't specifically want something Imperial.

The Clipper's big niche is survivability, and that's what mine is fitted for these days. If you want a proper blockade runner for open and/or think the thargoids might be unbelievably strong enemies you have to run from, nothing will serve you better than a Clipper.

Clipper makes an awesome pirate ship and most of the modules can be switched between your python and the clipper until you can afford dedicated modules for each. For PvE piracy you can earn 5-10mil an hour easily.

You could also d rate it and use it as an explorer. With an engineered FSD it can get around 40ly. Not as much as an Asp but you can explore in style.

An added bonus for Clipper exploration is that it's one of only two ships capable of mounting a double oversized fuel scoop. The other one being the T9.

I see your problem. I used the Clipper as a route to the Python and then on to my Cutter. I absolutely loved the Clipper, for the money, it does so much so well, apart from landing on small pads. However, once money is no issue, it's probably not a "best in class" at anything.

It is luvverly though.

My Clipper currently is set up as a miner. It just strikes a perfect balance between cargo hold and speed for me. Anything with smaller cargo hold feels like i have to return to base too often, but the Clipper provides me with enough endurance for a mining tour. At the same time it's faster than all alternatives with higher cargo hold, which makes a big difference when mining for specific materials. Being a bit faster when flying from asteriod to asteroid makes it much more bearable.
.
Ther other thing: whenever i new powerplay equipment and need to save slaves from Archon Delaine to get some merit, this ship is quickly changed for that purpose. The changes are minor. I just replace the two medium mining lasers, refinery and prospector limpets with two multicannons, hatch breaker limpets and a FSD interdictor and i am good to go. Its superior speed again makes a big difference when disabling my targets.
.
Not the ship i fly the most, but when i need one of the mentioned tasks done, i'd yet have to find a ship which would do them better. :)

Thank you for the ideas and suggestions Cmdr's.
Mainly a PvE guy but I will admit I have never tried my hand at piracy and been thinking about it, so that may be a new adventure.
Exploration is a thought (currently have a DBX as a scout) and I use a T7 for mining. Guess we will have to see what the cockpit view is like. For those to occupations I, at least, like to enjoy the view.
And a "go fast/get away" ship is always useful - especially as Winter is arriving...sometime.
I'll play around.

Kill it with fire!

Then buy a Python. :p

I've brought a Clipper twice.
Found no use for it. Planning to strip the most recent one out and sell it again. :p

CMDR Cosmic Spacehead

I hear you. Kind of like me and the T7.
As a Lakon loyalist I always buy one but, in the light of the T9, Anaconda, and Python, I always wonder what the heck to do with it. Finally had the thought to make it a dedicated miner instead of the Python. That way I satisfy both camps!

It's the best cockpit in the game imo.

It's good looking but white interior should be banned. I struggle to see my hud and have turn ship around to see heat or speed. What I think the clipper is the best big ship for maneuvering in supercruise. It may be my perception but it also the best large ship I know for interdicting.

I use mine true to its purpose, as a VIP passenger carrier. It's my main money earner, and it does it in style. It gets decent range, has room for a decent business/first-class cabin and can still comfortably hold its own in a fight or escape when needed. I fly it less since I've bought an Anaconda, that it true, but as other Clipper pilots have stated, it's one of the most enjoyable ships to fly.

Double oversized fuel scoop??? What the heck is that? That is just gobbligoop to me.

Engineer those drives to the max and go wheeeeeeeeee.

It's actually a really good ship for trade CGs when there are pirates around as a fully engineered Clipper can run away from anything that might want to steel your cargo.

Also a lot of fun for bounty hunting as it's got the firepower to take down any NPC but flies like a drifty fighter.

Hm, where to start.

- unique handling/feel as a combat ship
- the quintessential pirate ship
- provided you don't break down saying buh-bye to outposts, one of the best MR ships in game
- with the same caveat as above, one of the best feeling miners in the game
- infuriating to take out as a mid-cap trader
- truly excellent explorer, if you aren't obsessed with 70 LY jump ranges

Before I bore myself, it might be simply better to say it does just about anything not involving small landing pads.

A rate that baby and you now have a large ship that handles like a fighter and is great fun to fly. Great for blockade running as others have said. One downside is that the high fuel consumption makes it not much good for exploring.
