Pleiades has been my forward base for a couple of months now. I'm based at Artemis Lodge also. There's a fairly good economy here and some of the bases in other systems are very interesting (bases in rings, asteroid bases, etc.).
When you get settle in and get the itch to go out for a short sightseeing trip, consider going to the Running Man Nebula right next to the Orion Nebula. Horsehead Nebula a few jumps past Orion. Check out the Orion Nebula Tourist Centre in PMD2009 48. It has a shipyard and outfitting (7 ships are currently sold there) so you can ship stuff to yourself there. There's not much of an economy there but it sure is a beautiful place and Running Man is a very tightly clustered set of systems. [on the way, there's a base (pitstop) in the Witchhead Nebula but it does not have a shipyard or outfitting iirc]
GL and HF and watch out for the Goids (they're all over the Pleiades)

I'm quite fond of Hutton Orbital. Should come visit some time
