I did it by bounty hunting all the way, choosing the right targets helps, i think that i turned in about 3 million to feds, and about 3 million to empire and alliance, along with 250k to feds alone worth of exploring.
Now i hunt in a system where i get 500 k bounty in 30 minutes, 400 k for feds, 70 for empire and 30 for alliance. I grind a bit, and in few hours i can get couple of millions. Doing it in a cobra, earned master status, i think i am close to the next level, and i am still no friend with the main faction in the system? That might be a bug, although i have novice rank in federation and i am considered a friend..
I did not do any trading, maybe i earned like 100k altogether, and very few killing missions.. Those are tedious to perform and mostly take too much time for the reward they offer.
As i reached master rank, i have all kinds of missions offered right now, and bounty hunting is much easier when you see friendly targets in green on the radar, so it helps not to shoot the wrong kind of target.
i see lots of ranting on the forum, but all it takes to sort out lots of beginner problems is to grind a bit, which is a satisfaction. and a learning process.
