Finally got my new mining Python and almost lost it on day 2 hehe.

There is no doubt that the addition of Drones to mining has helped make mining more scalable.
Prior to 1.3, I was content to sit on my Asp and mine away. There was no real motivation to get another ship for mining, but the addition of the collector and prospectors changed that. This allowed me to sample more rocks in a shorter time and cherry pick more lucrative roids.
The time came when I had about 80mill and had to decided whether spending that money on a mining python would give me a gain. Was it worth spending the 80mill + ?
Well this weekend in southern Australia we were hit by a polar vortex that bought so very cold air up from the south polar region so the whether was horrible. What better time to try out a new mining vessel, with a hot cuppa and a warm cat on my lap.
I bought and upgraded a Python while still keeping enough cash to cover insurance excess etc.
I now have 128t of space, that's a lot of prospectors so I can always sample more rocks and find what I need. I can also have more collectors out at the one time picking up bits faster. (I can get more space but I need the longer jump ranges for where I am).
And of course it’s a Python so I can hold my own in the High Intensity RES sites where the yields are so much better.
Day one was great, bring in millions and spending it on upgrades, while maintaining a buffer for insurance.
On Sunday morning I did get a bit careless once though:
Happily mining away and I come across a beautiful 57% painite roid and start blasting off chucks, 16 chunks woohoo!!!!
I get the usual you are being scanned message and I check and its a Dangerous NPC Viper. No probs I engage but I was greedily trying to maintain my station near a 57% painite rocks to allow the droids to finish collecting the precious.
Then suddenly some purple flashes and I get attacked from behind by another ship ... … I look and it’s a Dangerous NPC Python, oh oh!. Hit the button to drop Chaff and does not see to help much.
Within seconds it had all gone wrong and shields were down, hull was rapidly decaying with that horrible glass cracking sound and the ship voice calmly rattling off a list of things that were taking damage or were now offline.
OK I am out of here. See you Painite……. I start to move off raise the cargo scoop about to hit boost and the dreaded “Thrusters Offline” announced!!!!! Nooooo, I drift a few meters and stop. Now being pounded with some purple flashes and lasers and hearing much hissing and spitting.... 50% hull... 40% hull, more glass cracking. I try to get to the Systems panel but before I can, the voice says "Thrusters Online". What? Ummm OK BOOOOOOOOOOOOOST, CHAFFFFF, BOOOOOOOST, which way is Up I need to get clear. I assume it was the automated repair module but it surprised me as I was flailing through the menus and had not got to that tab yet to see what I could do.
I managed to manoeuvre through some roids so they would take most of the hits, full pips to engines then start boosting a chaffing some more. I managed to get away with 35% hull and no sensors. I get clear of the field and jump into Super Cruise, then it is a nervous trip back to the station hoping not to get interdicted. I made it home safe, repaired the sensors and docked.
Man mining is boring…. Not if you don’t want it to be.

Nice story.

Your thrusters appeared to have a temporary module malfunction. These can happen, if a module becomes more and more damaged (higher chance of temporary failure). As long as the module has >0%, it will recover after some seconds.
I had this with thrusters, lasers (firing on their own) and powerplant.

Nice story and screenshot.

I have my new mining loadout Python ready, but haven't used it in anger yet.

What sort of rate of return were you getting? Ring type/Pristine reserves?

I can top that. Coming home after 3 hours of mining with 168T of the good stuff in my Python. As I exit SC, a Cobra flashes into real-space above me. It starts issuing threats - "I'm going to boil you up!". Haven't had a pirate jump me in a while, my brain is still in mining mode, I've already switched off and thinking about swimming around in my cargo hold Scrooge McDuck style. I lock on and shoot it...while the scan hadn't completed...within gun range of a space station..."Would you like to rebuy your current loadout?" <sigh>

Noooo! oh man, I sympathise.
I know what you mean about being in mining mode too. When I am in my vulture in a warzone, everything seems to just click and I am ready for almost any situation. However after mining, I often try to supercruise with hardpoints deployed, or go to the right panel instead of the left to view contacts even though I know they are on the left. The funniest is where I have lowered the cargo scoop instead of the landing gear when coming in to land.

Rate of return is hard to judge. I really have not done a timed session. Having the extra collector limpet really make the diff as the frags are collected quicker and with all of the extra cargo space I can carry 120 limpets so, I can sample a lot more roids and cherry pick. On my last few runs, have sometimes only comeback with 80 or so tons of cargo, but it has been mostly Plat, Pain and Pall as I am being fussy and normally only going for high percentage rocks of those. I will do some timed runs when the server comes back up from maint. I will try being less discriminating as that adds time. Will see what I get with a full load and how long it took (excluding mining missions)

Yes, mining in hires is fun and dangerous, not because of "too hard ai" but because of all this stuff you need to do. Managing refinery, drones, serching for next asteroid. When you hear "under attack" you are not prepared to deal with it.
This is how it ended for me just few days ago:
Waiting for shields to restart before trying to dock so i do not kill myself hitting the landing pad too hard...

I geared my brand new python for mining as well, inspired by the mining CG and the mine for dummies thread - and I promptly rammed it into an asteroid face on as I mistimed thrusters with cargo scoop open - seems it lacks severe reverse thrust power in that mode.

Fortunately, the python B6 shield just barely took 1 outer ring damage and I bounced off. There was that 1 second moment of oh just before i smacked into the looming face of the asteroid though.

Its hard to judge rate of return due to the fact that what you find varies from trip to trip. I just went to a Pristine metallic High Intensity res with 100 drones on board after 1 hour andme 10 mins of being picky 128t cargo was full but I hardly found any Painite this time around (only 5 tons). I sold the ore for 2 mill and also made 350k in bounties. If I had of travelled to some local high tech stations I may have found some more missions and that would have added many more $$$.

Hit flight assist off while reverse thrust and you stop quicker, just don't lose control :)

Yes you definately have you hand full sometimes. Gotta find a higher class collector controller I might sacrifice some cargo space for more collectors at once. If I swap from A5 to A6 for the collectors, might be able to have 4 out at once and drop to 96T cargo. But I am having trouble finding A6 collector

Collector's are odd numbers that's why :)

I've done that in my Vulture! So unfair!!.
.
I use my Python for mining too (4.7 mil rebuy) and I had a really stupid accident last night which is one everyone should be aware of!
.
I was mining, same as OP, happily picking up loads of gold and some Osmium, perfectly safe as I was not in a RES but in the Inner ring of Alkupai 12, but I have this issue when mining do you guys? The darned collectors keep dying prematurely for some reason? So I was messing with my keys and spitting out some more collectors and getting that annoying message that says cargo Scoop not deployed, when it is! I think the collectors get stuck some how?
.
Anyway I was stabbing at my keyboard and somehow i hit my 'Silent running' key, I never use Silent running so I didnt know which key it was......can you guess what happens next? Well, I was still mining and all of a sudden i hear the alarm going off and messages about overheating! Then stuff starting to fail! What!! Panic time whats going on??? Had aquick scan of messages and I see the one saying 'Silent running' is on! How did I do that? Well i need to turn it off but I dont know the key!!! Honestly I was at 300 degrees stuff was sparking away smoke everywhere, I had to go into game options to scan through the control settings and find 'Silent Running' and you know how long a list the controls are! Meanwhile I could still hear all the crackling and popping and sounds of my ship with 4.7 mil rebuy being cooked going on in the background! I tried to stay calm and scrolled through the list and found Silent running - it was 'delete' key why? who knows? Got back to the game to find I was on 30% hull everything was dying and I was over 300 degrees, I turned off Silent Running and just watched in horror as my hull fell apart bit by bit until at last my temp fell below 100 degrees! I made it! I think I was on 12% hull, I nearly had stroke!! I went straight into settings and removed the keys for silent running, I never use it anyway, now its disabled! I then limped back to crouch and got repaired, it wasnt that bad actually..maybe 20K? but I lost all my collectors and cargo that i had mined when the cargo hold hatch failed!
.
Beware!!
