Finally made Baron. Should i or shouldn't i.

So after doing 4 baron rank ascention missions in a row today it finally promoted me to baron, yay \o/ go me .

I have been mostly flying the python all a grade bar the pp.

So before i go and by my shiny new clipper, using python to pay towards it, i had a look at ed ship yard and created a fit similar to the python. I was pretty shocked to see the sheilds are no where near as strong as the pyhthon at 647mj. The best i could get the sheild to wad 489mj thats with 7a gen and 3 a class boosters . I was always under the impression that the clippers i have fought pve wise were using sub par sheilds but now it seems they really are that weak!! Which is scary as the clipper, i Have found, tend to loose hull rapidly oncd the shield drops.

So is there any other redeaming quality of the clipper apart from speed?

Im combat focused at the moment and fit for endurance so mostly beam and pulse with 1-2 scb's and 3 boosters.

Are there any others CMDRS out there that have moved from python to clipper that can give advice?

I went the opposite way, A rated Clipper to Python. Personally I'd keep the Python. The clippers base shields are much lower than the Anaconda (only other ship that also uses Class 7 shields). Not sure why but thats the way its been done.
The Clipper is fast and (for what it is) fairly cheap, its good for RES sites since it can move to enemy ships quickly and its good for running away from PVP.

It has bad weapon placement, average shields, weak hull. Power and heat management are probably about the same as the Python tbh.

Simple answer, NO.
they are nice to fly, however they have a joke of a fuel tank (can at least be rectified now), terrible jump range, can only land on large pads.....
By all means, get one as well as your Python, but for heavens sake, do not get rid of the (imo) the best ship in the game for a lame duck.
You can buy my discounted one, at an even further discount if you like, it's just been sat gathering dust.
If you like the "shiney" part of it, get the Python Tactical Paint pack, there's a lovely white one.

Buy the Clipper, boost around a few times while melting in your chair from the sheer glory of the engine sounds, then sell it and hop back into your Python.

If you didn't already have the Python, I'd say to definitely get the clipper cuz it is pretty damn fun, but the Python is just better.

When an Imperial Baron lands at an orbital in a Clipper, they know it is a Person Of Consequence and often line up to throw flowers at my feet as I walk by, or they offer me their daughters, clad in alluring outfits (their sons, too!) The dock rats in my demesnes spit-shine the skids on my Clipper and I usually appreciate the elegant floral arrangements that they put in the little cut-crystal vases duct-taped to the sides of the cabin. Mental note: need something better than duct tape.

And, of course, I bask in the comfort of my stingray-skin covered Gautama Command Chair, which looks a lot like a Lakon command chair, only, uh, better.

Depends on your play style. For combat the Python is basically a shield tank w/ more firepower than the Clipper. But it's less maneuverable and not as fast. So if you prefer to swoop in/out or circle your targets while applying liberal amounts of chaff/SCBs, the Clipper may be for you. If you prefer to "just sit there" and take/receive damage, the Python may be for you. For the average CMDR, the Clipper is harder to PvP with vs. a Python. If you like the option of always being able to escape, the Clipper is your ship (an FDL isn't bad on this front either! - I view it as an in-between the Clipper and Python from a pure combat perspective).

Its so fast nothing can catch you and you can stack a ton of cells.

Seriously the clipper can run a strong shield solution. Ignore the boosted shield numbers, its the cells that keep you going.

I fought Kickass in his tank a few times around Leesti back in the day and even with an FdL railboat i couldnt smash him.

Only a fully tanked Python can do it (i tested it in my Python against a decent pilot or two) and then the Clipper can just bug at will.

Plus Clipper has a sexy cockpit.

I did what you are thinking, which is opposite what most people do. I went from A-spec'd Python to a type-9, back to an A-spec'd Clipper for power play, with absolutely zero regrets. I can afford to get anyone one of those ships back, if needed, but, I find PP rewarding and fun. One thing I noticed is that going into a high-conflict zone, my shields get to 1 bar before the enemy ships even load. So it makes shield management more important than the Python. You could not pay me to fly a Python again!!!!

notice, it is not great for anything. I keep my exploded scanners, because I never know where I want to go. Go to a expansion spot, go undermine, or go hunt federal agents, so I'm always scanning stuff. I keep the high rates fuel scoop and extra fuel tank, because I like to be independent. I don't need to dock often. If I'm out fighting, I can just use the large pulse lasers, same fire-power as a vulture.

of all ships I have flown, I feel the safest in the Clipper because of its speed and maneuverability. It dictates the battle must better than other ships.

Well, the main feature for you to fly a Clipper is speed before all, if you want to dictate engagement and be able to chase or run away at will, this is THE ship

Apart from that, it has a lot of power available, good fire power and distributor, enough agility, average shield, around 16 to 20 Ly jump range, and a LOT of cargo (a lot of shield cell banks if you want)

only the Cobra is that fast and balanced, overhaul it's a very good ship for people who don't want to "tank" damage, if it's not your taste then the Python is for you
