Finally put together a VR capable setup (for < $900)

I've been wanting to do this for awhile, but didn't want to drop the cash everyone said I'd need to put into a VR capable desktop. After some research though, I was able to put together something very nice for a pretty low price tag. :)

I bought a Dell Optiplex 7010 Slim, slapped a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti low profile graphics card in there, and added a 2TB solid state drive. That all ran me less than $600.

I decided to go for Samsung's Odyssey Plus VR headset, which I got for $275. It has the benefits of inside-out tracking (no base stations/external sensors) and a better display than the Rift or Vive. Has volume buttons on the headset too, which is nice.

Took about a half hour to set up, and my brother walked me through getting it working with my only VR games: Skyrim, Subnautica, and Elite Dangerous. I was impressed how seamless the setup was with Subnautica and Elite Dangerous. Skyrim VR is much more intense and nausea inducing, but I'm a modding pro with Oldrim and SE, so I'll tweak it and I'm optimistic it will be great. Already did some stuff there the last two days and noticed huge improvement in my comfort level.

Anyways, kudos to FDev for making ED very VR capable. It's really quite an experience. I need to tinker with some odds and ends and probably set up Voice Attack, but I can see myself playing exclusively in VR once it's all set up.

Dude, i have an 860k black, 8gb (upgrading to 16 soon). Might get myself that samsung headset if a 1050ti can do vr

I've been really impressed with my first real VR headset. I was using Google cardboard with my Samsung Galaxy S7 for a while, but that was just a carnival sideshow by comparison, really.

Running the Odyssey Plus myself. Nice headset and ED works great with it.

Literally 30 minute setup.

Only one problem : Are you a touch typist ?

What's the "slim" PSU Wattage ? I'm highly interested, my elder son's pc is a slimcase, i always thought a thin PSU would not handle a 1050.
The 1050 Ti uses 60W max, according to one source, and the slot has 50W. I'm not seeing that anything I've done so far is pushing the power limit, and others have run similar builds with no problems.

Funny that I bought my 1080ti Founders Edition a year or so ago and the price is about what it was then if not more. I would have thought with the 2080 out, it would have dropped a bit.

Nice. Personally I would have gone for a smaller SSD and a mechanical drive and with the extra money get a better GPU.

Still a nice machine though and glad.you are enjoying VR. ED is superb in VR.

Yikes...
My GPU is on it's way back from being RMA'd and I'm using a GTX970 in the mean time, with Rift S and all settings on low/off it barely plays ED and is always in reprojection.

That 1050ti benchmarks 61% lower performance than the 970... does it really work? Does the Odyssey plus have much lower resolution or something?

I feel like you're below minimum spec there, even at the lowest settings. So good for you if it works!

Actually I'm pretty sure the Odyssey has a higher resolution than the Rift or Vive. The biggest downside to it is that since the HMD tracks the controllers, your hands have to stay in front of you.

It's very possible that I'm not pushing it to the limits right now though; I'm still optimizing all my graphics settings. I don't have any prior real VR experience to compare with.

The 1050ti isn't going to give you Ultra everything, but you should still be able to play with pretty reasonable settings. (Spaceports will hammer the card, but they are very detail-heavy).
Enjoy the Odyssey, as far as VR goes it is a 'nice' headset choice. If you fancy another 'good' VR game, take a look at Superhot VR, it is a great game - even if it is a little 'different' from the 'regular' FPS :)

You will seriously never go back. The feeling from INSIDE the ship is like nothing else. The scale and enormity of it is breathtaking. I have been rolling with a GTX 970 and DK2 for a year almost and cannot (and wouldnt want ) to go back. Just got the Oculus Rift s for better xclearer graphics....welcome aboard commander - THIS IS THE REAL GAME

Crap - does ED not run well with the "s"? The oculus site said 970 would run it.?!

True. Good entry level setup though. Super easy to upgrade the graphics card down the road.
Good for you if everything works fine. I'm a bit concerned for the future, for example for atmospheric planets and legs. That's why I spent more to get a more powerful setup. I don't want to change everything again when these features are released.

Yes, it will work - a bit like @Bloodsign - you may have to turn things down a little, but at least the Rift S display running at 80Hz 'gives back' some performance headroom over the Rift etc. so you should just jump in and play, enjoy! Going from the Rift to Rift S, for me, was a great move!
