finally saw elite in vr

Went to a local vr place and they downloaded elite from my steam account. This was pretty nice of them actually.

The sense of scale is, well, hard to convey. I felt as if i was in a new ship, A much bigger ship, in a much bigger station.
I get it now you vr guys and gals.

After looking around the cockpit ans seeing the text is very legible, i called out commands to the guys at the keyboard.
I launched, and my whole world went crazy for about 3 minutes. I cant blame the guy as i normally use a hotas and he didn't really know the keyboard controls .
I figured out i don't get motion sick as the death spiral i was doing in the station probably would have made me puke.( it was starting to make me a little dizzy so i had to look down at my feet).
Being stood up didn't help the dizziness.

I called it a day with elite and had him exit before station security got me trespassing and blew me up.

Even with that short a time in an uncalibrated game it is apparent I'm gonna get a headset.

Santa actual has something i want this year.

I just recently tried out the Rift and the Samsung headsets at the Microsoft store in Charlotte, NC. While I didn't get to see Elite it was awesome. Like you said, the sense of scale is amazing. The good news is there are all kinds of sales for Black Friday... The bad news is that I don't get paid until the 30th!

If you have the scratch and live in the US, the Rift is on sale at Best Buy for $349.

its 349 in uk as well direct from oculus ;)

Ahh yes running Voice Attack in safe mode?

My AI that day was having a breakdown.I actually got jammed in the slot right next to the gun emplacements. I kept seeing the countdown timer slowly getting smaller. Got panicky saying saying hit the quit, hit the quit.
Gotta give the guy credit, he found the quit button.
It was probably my first time quitting to avoid a re buy.

I tried to get elite to work using daydream, but that was a farce. Bad graphical glitches, super hot phone, multiple programs needed. This with a pixel xl.
If you want to try vr don't go the phone way, it might actually turn you off from getting a dedicated headset. It made me go "is this it?". Luckily i found a helpful vr bar.
Unfortunately they lost a customer, not through bad service , but due to my getting my own. But they gained free advertising for being so helpful.

My first WOW moment was looking out from the pilot seat and the hands and arms were exactly where my hands were on the HOTAS. When they moved exactly in sync with my movements, I was sold on VR as being the only way to play Elite. That was the first time I actually felt I was on the bridge of a ship. DCS world has pretty much the same effect but without the pilot figure it isn't quite as immersive. I never thought a little detail like that, a throwaway item would have been so mind blowing (for me anyway). As others have said, you only really get a sense of the size of these objects when you can see them as you would in RL.

Never go back to 2D!

Many (not all yet) of the DCS birds have full body animations in the pilot seat. "shift+p" turns them on.

Ooo, didn't realise that! I have most aircraft in DCS but fly the A10-C almost exclusively but never tried this. The Harrier is out next week and that looks like it does have a pilot.

Thanks very much for the tip [up]

Your welcome. I saw the Harrier but think I'll pass. I kinda leave my VTOLing to my hanger full of helicopters. I find once I'm hovering around I'm in no hurry to speed up. So much to see. I saving up now that Il2/777 is going to add WW1 aircraft to their engine. They're calling it Flying Circus. They heard the outcry from us ROF pilots and I can't wait to fly the old canvas and wood in VR.

I have been toying with the idea of going VR. Didnt really want to spend out on the OR headset, as i still think it is over priced. But after reading commanders experiences with vr and ED i may just bite the bullet and go for it...

Dogbite and Blairvoyach:
I would love to still be playing DCS but how do you guys manage it in VR?
For me it was a stutter fest in VR (especially near towns) . I have GTX1080 and 4670 cpu.

Short answer for me? A decent cpu clock 4.4 ghz. A GTX 1080ti. 3200 DDR4 system ram (big diff from ddr3 in DCS). I also set ASW to lock 45 fps. So much more depends on things best discussed over on the DCS forum- so as not to hijack here.

For fast moving games like DCS , 45fps with ASW is not acceptable as far as I'm concerned. Can't stand the double-image aircrafts as they fly by me when ASW kicks in.
So I will not be upgrading my cpu for DCS just yet then until they optimize the code a little more.
