Finally got the game working, so stage 1 complete.

It seems that the game defaults to mouse and keyboard... so how do I set up my joystick?

What joystick do you have?

In options, control, there is a drop down menu with supported HW and configs, if it detects your stick it will appear there.
It has profiles for various Saiteks and TH (like the HOTASX that I own)

hit esc

Get into

OPTIONS>
CONTROLS>

scroll down to option wanted click on it then use axis / button on your controller

You can have both keyboard/mouse as well as controller bindings at the same time for a lot of options

Then save (scroll right down the bottom and hit APPLY)

If you have a common stick or controller you can pick a predefined layout - then modify as you see fit
