Find and scan the signal source

Just shown up and there is dead anaconda. I have been asked to find and scan the signal source. I have targeted the onboard data beacon but this hasn't had any results. What am I meant to do?

Have you scanned the onboard data beacon with the correct scanner? There are so many scanners we have onboard these days .....

I can't quite remember what the procedure here is...
I think the data link scanner? That requires you be in the correct mode (analysis?) and I think hard points deployed... Maybe.
They really really need to sort this mess out..

I believe you need the data link scanner, yes. Normal (not analysis) mode is sufficient. Make sure it is allocated to a fire button and turned on (check right hand panel). Hard points deployed.

The USS containing the signal source might have timed out. Been a long time since I did one of these. If anyone else has advice to offer ......

Oh, and you need to get up close .... really close ... before scanning.
