Newcomer / Intro Finding a role to play: A Fuel Rat maybe ?

I think it's time I found a role to play.
I can perform the basics: launch, dock, hyperdrive, Supercruise, cruise, planet surface land, SRV maneuver, plot a course, fuel scoop, sell to Carto's, etc; and have no wish to engage in voluntary combat; don't wish to "take sides"; love to explore; and thought maybe a "Fuel Rat" might be my thing. That is if they will have an 80 year male with a very poor memory and would probably need rescuing more times himself ! ;)
I would need to achieve certain prerequisites so as to meet Fuel Rat criteria in terms of an acceptable ship, satisfactory combat skills (although I don't think the Rats enter into combat and that really appeals to me), adequate credits, added mandatory modules, etc. and I would enjoy doing that. All of this would give me a directive and clear objects to achieve, rather than aimlessly fly around maybe just doing non-combat missions.

What do you people think ?

Thanks.

EDIT: in Italics.

I've just watched this:
Gaming Embedded | My Month As A Fuel Rat - YouTube
..... and it's made it even more appealing. The primary aim is to save somebody not necessarily be the first there to claim the prize. It means if I'm late, or don't get there at all, there are others backing you up who will get there. Which must be very reassuring for the stranded CMDR and comforting for every other Fuel Rat.
Believe me, I'm been stranded, knew nothing about Fuel Rats, and it was a harrowing experience. I couldn't sleep properly ...... all the time worrying about what I was going to do. .... 😞

If you want to become a Fuel Rat, go for it!

They have a website. You can send an application here. Ask them about what you need to achieve to become one of them and I'm sure they will guide you.

Good luck, commander

Have we got any Fuel Rats here?
I'm having trouble completing my own Fuel Rat registration ..... :( (see attached).
Just don't understand what they want. I've given them 5 alternative names earlier and then what do they do?
EDIT: As for asking them anything ...... forget it ...... 😞

Kudos to all Fuel Rats & trainers!

From my research, you'll need a ship with a decent jump range, fast fuel scooping, cargo capacity (add anothe fuel tank), limpets (and cargo space for them), and the appropriate limpet controller.
You'll also need spare time! Many of the calls are from explorers (of those learning about jump ranges etc), and can be in deep space. The fastest time from Sol to Colonia is just under 4 hours, I don't know the FR patrol patterns, but you could be a couple of hours of scoop & jump flying.

IMHO, the ships with the best fuel scooping/jump range and times are Dolphin (impossible to overheat), AspX, Anaconda. You'll find grade 5 engineered modules help a lot!

Good luck!

Thanks for that. At the moment I'm focusing on just registering with them. Hence post #5 on my problem just joining them ......

Looks like they use IRC for communications and therefore need you to choose a nickname that's not in use already on IRC. Try a other nicknames until one is accepted.

I'd advise you to play the game a bit more first Wombat. Just a few days ago we were discussing the very basics of selling cartographic data...

Have you been on your own exploration trip yet? Do you know how to filter for fuel stars? How far have you traveled? Are you still set for economic route plotting? Is your ship optimised for long distance travel? Do you know how to safely escape a star if you crash into it? Have you engineered your FSD? Have you used synthesis to create limpets before and do you have the materials? Have you experimented with module priorities?

Sometimes the rats have to save people who are on life support and every second counts.

Not to dissuade you but I don't think you're ready yet. If you're looking for a goal and want to be a fuel rat then I'd start with planning your very own deep space expedition first just to get the experience.

Hi Wombat, not sure what your problem is with the registration - it looks like you have given a name and it has been verified? Here is a link to the registration process - https://confluence.fuelrats.com/display/public/FRKB/How+to+Join
Good luck. (y)

I knew one would be around sooner or later!
love the ship name Cmdr Floss!
Haha, yeah saw this thread posted in one of my Discord channels, so came to see if there had been any response.

Thanks, I chose that name just before DW2 last year. I kept changing my mind and said it was a woman's prerogative. Someone replied, "There's your ship name right there!" - so that's what it became. :D

@Surly_Badger would love it.

Thank you Sir Ma'm. o7 I think the registration issue has been resolved. However, I have others. Should I ask them here, hoping for you to answer, or ask them in a private conversation with you? Thanks.

Thanks for the link. I already have it, but have read no further than Step 1: Registration. :( I will read the rest ....... ;)

I received the following response regarding Fuel Rats Registration for which I am extremely grateful if not a little confused (What, not again ! ...... 😄)
SQUAD-561 Squadron Application - Wombat1940 (PC)

Hello Wombat1940,

this is the most heartwarming application ive seen so far. Normally I just paste in the same text every time here but I thought you deserved something personal.

As much as I want to approve your application, the squadron is only for active Fuel Rats members that have been activly ratting for at least a week. Therefor I sadly have to decline it this time but i would very much welcome if you rat and then apply at a later date.

My question is: If I can't join SQUAD-561 how do I get the necessary tools so that I can rat, as requested above? Thank you.

I am not a member but surely the squadron is a different thing from your fuel rat registration. So you register as a rat, do some rescues, learn the SOP, (whatever order) then you can apply to join the squadron. So the squadron is for active rats but rats don't need to belong to the squadron.

I stand to be corrected of course.

P.S. Have you read the recent article at:

Yes ....... I think you're right. I initially thought one had to belong to both to be an active rat. However, what you say now makes a lot of sense: "... the squadron is for active rats but rats don't need to belong to the squadron".
Thanks

I'll just chime in and say that the Fuel Rats are a wonderful organization and trying to join them is a good idea.

You'll have to learn a bunch of stuff, and upgrade your ship, etc. but it'll be worth it, I think, even if in the end you don't join. Go for it, and see where it takes you!

Yes squad membership is not necessary, and of my 4 PC rats, only one of them is a member of the squadron - two others are members of Hutton Orbital Truckers squadron.

Thank you Sir. o7 I think the registration issue has been resolved. However, I have others. Should I ask them here, hoping for you to answer, or ask them in a private conversation with you? Thanks.

You are very welcome, good to hear your registration issue may be resolved. Feel free to ask any questions or, once you have access to our IRC and join #ratchat you will be most welcome to ask any questions there and have a lot more people to give you answers. I wasn't sure if you had the link but thought there was no harm in posting it just in case. I'm sure you'll be able to follow the rest without too much problem - after all, if I was able to as a woman in her 60s, I'm sure anyone can. :D
