Newcomer / Intro Finding a service ingame

Hi,

so I know about EDDB, but tabbing out and typing long and complicated system names is annoying sometimes.

Therefore I was wondering how to find a specific service ingame. I know you can filter the galaxy map by service, which points you to a system. Say, interstellar factors for example.

But then, when I am in the system, how do I find out what station that service is actually at?

(This is for Horizons)

Use the system map and click on each station, there'll be a list of whatever services that station offers on one of the lefthand menus.

It's worth noting that the in-game galaxy map will only show you material traders, tech brokers and interstellar factors from systems you've already visited, and only within a certain lightyear radius (I believe it's 40ly). So if you haven't been around the area much, it's likely none will turn up on the in-game filters.

If you can't find any nearby, it's quite easy to use inara's quick search function here: https://inara.cz/galaxy-nearest. Just plug in your current system name and click one of the little buttons on the right, shown here:

This'll give you a nice long list of stations with whatever service you're looking for, and there's even a little button next to each system name to copy it to your clipboard, so you don't even have to type it out when you plot your route. Nice and simple. :)

If you mean station facilities, then this is broke. It is a bug from Update 9 or 10 IIRC, and has still not been fixed.

I have just checked in game and station facilities in the system map is still blank. Disabled facilities do show.
I double checked this still a bug, as if you focus on a FC next to a station (or anywhere) it DOES show both facilities and disabled facilities.
This is a problem when trying to find e.g. Material Traders.

However, there are 3rd part tools as in above posts if you need them.

Or use Voice Attack, get HCS voice pack AdAstra and just say "Number One, Plot a course to the nearest Shipyard" and then sit back and watch your number one do the work for you... Then just say "Engage" and feel like Captain Picard...

Does that work for finding specific material traders too? Or is it just for finding the closest trader whatever they may be trading?

AdAstra looks interesting.

Just remember that AdAstra is an annual subscription and requires at least one normal voice-pack to work. At the moment you get a £10 voucher after buying AdAstra (for £10) so you can say you are getting your first year for free as long as you subsequently buy at least £10-worth of stuff in the store.

I have multiple voice-packs and totally love having them in game, really worthwhile.

You will have to look it up yourselves, as I am usually too far from civilization, so I do not use this feature often, but I tried and it does work... I also use it sometimes to plot a predefined route consisitng of multiple waypoints... You can predefine your own waypoints and then just ask your crew to load the expedition and they will themselves open the galmap, search your first waypoint and plot a route... Once you reach that waypoint, you just say "Plot a course to my next waypoint" and they will do... It is really an interesting way to control the game, adds a lot of immersion... Especially for VR players like me, because I do not have to take of the HMD to look for buttons... I just give commands...

And as Para Handy said, it is annual fee service, but it costs peanuts...

Thanks for the information. I’ve got an embarrassing number of voice packs from HCS, including one for Star Citizen and their Aviator version for MSFS2020 (great for talking to ATC even if I don’t use it’s full scope) and have been delighted with them.

I’ll have a look at AdAstra in more depth, I remember getting an email about it a long time ago when it was still in Alpha but didn’t follow it up.

Thanks again

You're welcome. It's not perfect, sometimes it glitches (especially that expedition feature, it did forget the progress of the expedition once and wanted to start from the first waypoint after I returned to the game) but overall it is OK. Even for someone with accent like me... :)
