finding a target for a mission

So I was playing last night and I had an assassination target for a mission. I flew to the system that this target was said to be in and I feel like I visited more than 20 USS and the Nav Becon. I searched and searched and searched for about 4 hours ish and I still could not find the target. Is there was way to pinpoint the location or is it just a random spawn from a USS.. Does it matter if its unidentified, weak, or strong?

I saw a video on this. Apparently you are looking for an 'unknown signal source' - not to be confused with a weak or strong source. Unidentified is what you want and you can find it while super-cruising within that system.

You can check YouTube for this issue to find that video - I haven't tried it yet since I'm at work.......

I got a similar mission again today. Kill (target name) hero or (system). I went to the system and flew into any unidentified signal. I did this until I failed the mission because time ran out, 3hrs!!! I of course killed bounties along the way but never found my target... Am I doing something wrong?

I am still having trouble with this. Here are my specific questions:

1 - Are you always able to find & scan your target from supercruise? I ask because I'm not sure if I would ever have to exit supercruise to be able to find the target.
2 - What is the best method to continually find the unidentified signal sources? Should I be staying close to the system's star? Or should I be sort of aiming for a certain point in the system? Last night when I (unsuccessfully) searched for a target I eventually stopped seeing the signal sources completely.

Great game - a lot of fun so far, it's definitely the exact opposite of a 'scripted' game, which comes with a learning curve. Thanks!

My understanding (in PC) is that your target can be found in Supercruise and in USSs (though I'm sure if your target is currently visible in Supercruise you will not encounter them in a USS).

Using an interdictor is the easiest way to get a target, but remember, if they're not Wanted you can get fined and even a bounty put on your head if you kill them and they're not Wanted. Being an assassination target does not mean they're criminals, heck you might be unwittingly be working FOR criminals - always check what faction you're working for.

Another update:

No success! I took another assassination mission which sent me to a system. I went into SC and started traveling away from the sun. I stopped at maybe 30 USS's and no target.

Although I noticed after the fact that one ship did try to contact me saying something about 'I have some new information for you'. However I didn't notice it before I SC'ed away from them.

Did I totally mess up my mission by not getting the update from that ship? Really confusing game mechanism on these types of missions...

Before 1.3 you had to go to USS but now assassination targets will ALWAYS be in SC. and the Information guy don't worry about it..He will basically ask you to jump out near him and give you a unique mission (Which from my experience gives you junk)

I also tried some of these and met with the same frustrations. Not being familiar with the ins and outs of ED, and it also having a lot of bugs and issues with missions not working right, I chalked up the inability to locate these targets in any efficient way another bug.

Now I am focusing on cargo missions only which I find work best, and the amount of time you put in for the rewards are definitely better.

Hope they get this fixed cause I would like to have more variety in the missions I choose.
