Finding assassination target (again) after fleeing?

I took 3 assassination missions last night. I bumped into some scared NPCs who pointed me the right way. 2 missions (for separate targets) led me to System X. And one led me to Y.

When I got to X, I found one target in an Elite Anaconda in a USS. Got him down to about 30% hull, but then had to escape. Later that evening, I flew to System Y and took out the 3rd assassination target, also in an Elite Anaconda. Trouble is, when I fly back to System X I can't find either of the two first targets. Must've have dropped into 15 USSs, and the mission description still says they're both in X. I have encountered many clean NPCs flying around in circles - as they normally do when redirecting you to another system, but they say nothing. So I can't help but think that perhaps I've managed to crater the mission by fleeing.

Fast forward to today: I took a brand new assassination mission, with 2 active ones remaining in X. I fly to one of several systems that should hold the target (let's call it System Z) and am again bumping into silent and clean NPCs in USS.

So my question is: has anyone managed to (re)find their high value targets after escaping/fleeing a battle with any luck?

Thanks in advance!

Is your transaction panel showing the mission in red? if so its failed and you wont see them again. (I spent 8-12 hours trawling USS in that situation)
