Finding barnacles - tips?

I know about the Cannon guide, which provides hints on the types of planets and environment they are likely to be on, so that's a given. What I mean is, say you've found a candidate planet, and given that they don't show up as a POI blue circle, how do you then go about finding, on an entire moon, the dot where a barnacle site might be!

What I'm looking for are things like: what height would you need to fly to be able to see them visually, are they ALWAYS in canyons, is there always an associated wreck, do you see the glow visually when cruising above? You know, the nuts an bolts of the first contact with a new barnacle site.

I would like to know, too.
I have found several candidate bodies for barnacles, but flying 2km above any of them makes me feel like the google earth guys. (search it on youtube)
I tried the "search bright colorful canyons" on Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 2 (has several barnacles). It worked only once. And several of the barnacles aren't near any bright/colorful canyons.

If I have understood correctly than only the permanent POI type barnacles don't show up as POI on the scanner. Still, the POI circle isn't that large so in both cases it boils down to lots and lots of flying over the planet.

I do hope that the permanent POI type ones are placed such that they can be spotted relatively easy from high up... It would make sense for them to be spotted relatively easy, otherwise "needle in a haystack" would be an immense understatement describing the situation...
