Finding black holes

As Holly so correctly put it,

Well, the thing about a black hole - its main distinguishing feature - is it's black. And the thing about space, the colour of space, your basic space colour, is black. So how are you supposed to see them?.

I've been exploring on and off for a month or so now travelled to over 1600 systems and am currently 5000ly out on this trip. I've found most other things but would like to find a black hole. Any advice of where to look?

Systems that say "Black hole" in the info tab. Go to the system maia in the pleiades nebula. It's not far from civilized space and there's a black hole in the nebula there.

Couple of ways of doing this...

1) Use the Galaxy Map in Map view, and filter out all types except non main sequence. Click on the Info tab again. Then mouse over random grey circles - one of them may be a black hole within acceptable travelling distance. This is hit-and-miss, but sometimes you do encounter the right grey circle ;)

2) In the Galaxy Map again, in Realistic view, zoom out a bit, and use the brightness of the galaxy as a background, whilst rotating the view around - this will highlight black holes - as they are, as Holly says, black ;) ... Again, a bit hit and miss.

There are areas of the galaxy where you are more likely to encounter black holes - the galactic core being the best.

Good luck and good hunting, commander ;)

Change the star filter on the Galactic Map to non main sequence, then have a pan and scan to find Black Holes and Neutron Stars.

^^ Ninja'd!

Whereabouts are you? I may be able to point you to a close one.

My black hole.. Bad explorer. Mine mine mine..... :p

I came across my first one on accident, after, I actively looked for them (see my Sig) this said, be careful they are addictive.

Thing is, Holly never had a map :p He is however quite correct - they are black dots - unmissable on the map we have. See below for pic.

They are literally everywhere - just have a good look on the map. What I do is plot my course and then navigate down the plotted line, picking out all the black holes on the 1000LY leg and detour to them if within range of my plotted jumps. I also tend to cherry-pick them as systems with a black hole and multiple neutrons pay much more.
