Newcomer / Intro Finding Human Players

First thing first - wow, that's a really cool setup! You aren't messing around

And then:
Question - people keep warning me about other "bad" players. I suppose the question is why would they want to kill me (assuming I didn't have valuable cargo) and in a way why do I care? I've gotten killed by Naval ships before when I was too stupid to know I just had to run thanks to my little Viper Mark III. In those cases I just had to pay the insurance cost, unless I had enough credits) and was reset to my last base. I now keep enough credits on hand in case that happens but is there some ramification I'm missing?

No, it's just that. Internet and gaming anonymity bringing out the best, but sometimes the worst there is in people.
There are several individuals (And I'd like to stress that they are individuals among tens of thousands of players) who simply enjoy killing other commanders. just like that. No goal, no gameplay, no piracy poleplay... *shruggs* They are sitting in a system and shooting everything that can't run or doesn't shoot back.
Normally everyone just waves hand over them and goes about their business, but when such person camps a station in LHS 3447, where newbies spawn and kill them ten times in a row, it can make people sour.

I personally didn't have such experience and only met such person twice (Which is actually fewer times than I've been held at gunpoint IRL) It's not a big problem (forums, as per usual, kind of blow a bubble around it) but sometimes someone just feels a need to warn you about it. Which isn't anything bad, of course, it's good to know, especially for newbies, but anyone who has experience from games where random PvP is allowed isn't surprised. It's part of the fun.

Just a head's up to OP. You can't currently land on Earth's moon. The Devs are apparently saving it for something special or hand crafting it. I too grinded it out for a Sol permit but was sadly disappointed. You can land on Mercury though, streaking across it with the Sun in my face in an SRV made up for it.

And don't forget Ariel! That freaky moon is worth all the trouble with getting the Sol permit. One of the coolest places in the galaxy and it's right at our doorstep. ;)

No that's about it you get destroyed and you have the option of rebuying everything at a greatly reduced fee due to insurance. I wouldn't look too deep into what motivates players to attack others their reasons are their own and for the most part it is simply that they want a human target to shoot at and the game allows them to do just that there isn't any net gain in it for them other than the sport or entertainment of it. It might even be something you'll do one day...
