Finding it hard to start. Horizons.

Hi peeps, I'm really finding it hard to start elite with the base sidewinder in the starter system asellus primus with the horizon season pass, what would you recommend I do to make enough credits to upgrade my ship? What is good in my jump range???

Get into an Eagle ASAP, don't bother upgrading your Sidey. Do courier missions until you can afford an Eagle. Keep doing courier missions until you can at least D-rate your equipment. When you have some decent shields and a third weapon start hunting NPCs at a HighRez and cherry pick the guys that are already being picked on by the cops. You'll be in a Cobra in no time.

Missions can segway into exploring and vice versa, easy work, long hours, little pay, but big on getting experience in the rhelm of things.

Have you tried watching some videos on YouTube? Starter guides etc. There are so many and I find them a huge resource. So much better when you can see the video and listen to the commentary than reading posts on the forum in my opinion.

Personally I kept stopping at unknown signal sources doing a little bounty hunting which funded an upgraded drive. Once I could jump further I started doing more missions (I found all the missions it was giving me were too far away for my ship to reach until I upgraded the drive). I know what you mean, I thought the same but once you get over that first hurdle it gets much more fluid.

I waited in a high Res zone for like 30 mins and everyone I scanned was clean. Almost every station I visit has no missions on the mission board or ones that will get me 1 million + credits.. those I distrust as I have read they can have a serious detrimental effect on my rep.. so I'm kind of at a loss...

If you can fly far enough go to Niu Hsing. People use it to grind their Federal ranks but the money builds up quick.

Before you ditch that Sidewinder please understand that while you are learning how to do everything the rebuy on it is I believe nothing. Am I correct? So if you mess up while learning, replacement is easy ... every thing else will cost you so make sure you have at least one rebuy cost (preferably two) set aside.

Welcome to ED ...

Well, I figured it out last night... All I had to do was store my buggy bay and install a fuel scoop. Turns out my goldwinder was too heavy and it limited my jump range. I've now traveled to brani which was 12 jumps away and i am now making some credits o7

Keep the sidey until you are comfortable with travel, docking etc and if you have any mishaps then the Sidey is free to replace.

Until then uprate the FSD on the sidey to a D rated one as it will give you a little longer legs, maybe add a cargo rack and then use the Starport/Base missions to transport Data or small amounts of cargo. (this is what i did and i swapped to an Adder + Upgrades in a few hours whilst learning the basics, controls etc)

What a few quick credits? Fly out to a Resource Extraction Site - High; these are found in the rings around planets / gas giants. Scan all ships and look for one with a big bounty. Wait until the Feds or bounty hunters have nearly blown it up, and then start shooting ;)

That's exactly what I am doing in brani! Lol o7

Definitely keep hold of the sidey great for learning the basics with no cost if you end up dieing.

Try and get some small boom delivery or courier missions, and try and just get enough to upgrade you hyper drive. You should be able to get your ship to around 10ly which will allow you to do those missions that are that little bit further to travel.

THIS^^^^^^.......I made 700k last night in my sidey doing this for about an hour or 2, I'm gona do the same later till I get 3/4 million, those boom data missions were your getting maybe 12/25k for ridiculous jump ranges(for aa sidey) ditch those as I was getting between 40 and 150k last night for 1 bounty ship each ship maybe take 5/10mins max

I am 2 days into the PS4 version of the game and still in a sidewinder all of it now upgraded to A or D mods. I can afford the Eagle or Adder, but to be honest I am not use to the controls for the PS4 as on the PC I use a HOTAS set up. So until I am confident in the Sidewinder I will stick with that ship for now. Cheap, easy to replace and it can be a fun little ship. Jump range is now 14LY so I am good to move around on longer distances.

I do courier missions and also deliver trade goods to the stations I visit. So say you are going from a high tech system to a industry system with some courier missions. Fill your hold with trade goods that will sell for a profit in the industry system something like Consumer Technology or Progenitor Cells or Performance Enhancers. Before you sell these though check the missions because sometimes npcs will ask for a set quantity of these goods for a much higher price than what is on the market.

Or you could roam around a planet in the SRV collecting salvage from POI on the planet and sell them on the blackmarkets or trade markets at stations. I have done this to some good effect.

Oh and never be afraid of shipping biowaste or scrap as long as your hold is full and you can sell the goods then its not wasted. An empty cargo holds = empty in the head.

Problem is if your combat rank start to exceed your flying skill the game will become very difficult. The AI on higher ranked NPC's can be tough for new players.

Thanks for all the advice folks.. it is very appreciated and it's all written down in my little black book..
I'm a freelancer veteran so this stuff should come naturally to me... I just couldn't figure out why I was limited on how far I could jump.

Congrats on joining ED! I've been studying what the ED pros have done and earned 700k CR in ~2 hours. I now have a new ship! Here you go.
1. Stay in Solo game play (Just to start to get your credits up!)
2. Don't invest any credits ($$) into the Sidewinder. (This ship is "rubbish"!)
3. Take your rubbish...er, I mean Sidewinder to ringed planets.
4. Once there, look for "High/Hazardous Extraction Sites" and fly in, but don't shoot.
5. Watch/follow the security teams for them to start attacking WANTED ships. Then you scan those ships to get the "Wanted" statement on your panel.
6. (Now you shoot) From a distance, shoot those ships occasionally until they explode. And you will get the bounty.
If you don't see any action, travel to another star system -- the action will be there waiting for you.
Oh, yeah... and don't get blown up before you cash in. Else you will lose those well-earned credits.

Now get out there and do damage! "Every dog's got its day, and every man his number!"

Slight correction to the kill stealing technique in a haz-rez the security uplink doesn't work (hence hazardous) so it's less likely security ships will be there. Stick with high-rez for now, go to haz-rez when you can handle all the pirates alone and don't want the police getting in the way.

Don't carry cargo and be very careful of friendly fire.

Perfect timing! Community Goal in system now! (as well as in LHS 3447 and Eravate!)

When docked, go to the Mission Board, accept the mission, then go to a Res Site, (With a Kill Warrant Scanner equipped), and kill wanted Ships. Then turn back in in the station designated for the Community Goal (Beagle 2 Landing). You will earn the BH'ing bounties, but you will also gain rank in the CG. Then in a week, collect the millions as a reward!
