Finding missions targets with FSS scanner?

I've figured out how to use the FSS to find planets, generally look at systems etc... but my assassination missions usually say "Scan the Nav Beacon or use the Full Spectrum System Scanner to locate the target."

How do I use the FSS scanner to locate the target? Do I just check every damn signal source in the FSS until I stumble across it? I'm assuming that's not it because then it would obviously just be 10 times quicker to use the Nav beacon every time and the FSS wouldn't get used.

Yeah I don't think the FSS CAN find the damn target, tried multiple times and never did anything, just drop out and scan the nav beacon, seems to be the only thing that works.

USS show up as orange signals on the FSS, so if you see white, ignore it.

The way I do it:
  • Honk; this updates the missions with the target bodies the mission USS should be around. Note: The target bodies also appear with an orange grid over them
  • Turn towards that body
  • Jump onto the FSS. If you can't see the orange markers, zoom in on the target body (the white ones tend to overlap the orange ones from a distant zoom)
  • If you can't see them still, try one more zoom
  • If you still can't see it, see the footnote.

There's a couple variants in there... oribiting the "main star" means the USS can practically be anywhere in the system... Nav Beacon is easiest for those ones, as they may not even be orbiting a body, but this is usually restricted to Massacres.

The other is "Trade Lanes between Body X and Y"... they can spawn anywhere between two bodies; this is worst when it's between two bodies over 100,000Ls Best bet is to work out where the two bodies are relative to each other, zoom in on one (just to make sure it's not close) then track a line between the two bodies, finally zooming on the destination body. If you still can't see it, you might be "inside" the trade lane, in which case it could be anywhere around you; best bet is to veer off then look from outside.

I'll get screenshots in a sec.

So, by way of pictures, jumped into system, honked, missions updated:

Updates with bodies (in this case, both are orbiting a station)

With USS highlighted in dialler, no sign of the mission USS near the target body (Wells Dock orbits A1, no orange). Note the orange highlight of the body.

Zoom in, et voila, two mission USS

And just for completeness, here's a USS highlighting around the target body, when there's still zooming required... there's no other USS overlapping the orange in this case.

Assassinations can be found in fss, but as jmanis says you might have to zoom in many times, so if you're stacking missions the nav beacon is usually faster. Planetary mission targets don't always appear in the fss at all.

The other advantage of the nav beacon is that it will show you any hge in the area, which is nice :)

So what about mission targets on planetary surfaces? I can never seem to find them when using the FSS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't the target body done up in blue on the contacts panel, then you just fly to that planet?

I mostly found them by visiting all landable moons in the system (there is a filter setting in the navigation panel for that), one after the other.
It is not required to scan these with the DSS each.
Usually when visiting the last moon a message pops up in your communicator, telling you that your client scanned the nav beacon and that the target can be found at exactly the location you are currently orbiting. :)
(Don't bother to fly to the last moon in the list directly. The location will then spawn on the first moon. Just like when you are looking for your car keys).

After the message, look into the navigation panel again, you will see a sub-location for your moon, something like "potential salvage site" or "crash site".
Target it.
Don't bother flying there fast, it will move, sometimes up to 50km away, as soon as you approach it, for as long as the yellow circle shows horizontal lines in it.
When the circle remains solid look for a landing site within 2km of the crash site (otherwise your ship will take off without you and you need to recall it when you want to transfer any additionally cargo you found).
If there are skimmers guarding the site and you don't want to shoot it out, you can play Scarab-Bowling and then collect the cargo containers outside the perimeter.
