Finding missions

I have fonud that if you pick a system and then do misisons for the same corperation after a while you are offered a Federal rank progression mission. it will then go quite for a bit so you need to do more missions for that same corperation and then another federation mission will come along. I did this 5-6 times and got up to petty officer then i started to nget offered kill missions from the federation.
My understanding is that you just need to keep doing mission for Federation groups. The best ones with the best gains are where you bring them something for free. They rank you up faster. At a certain point when you do enough, you'll get offered a progression mission.
What I've been doing is finding a nice location to setup for missions (good mix of economies nearby), then rank that station up to Allied by doing mission mostly for the faction that owns the station and is in the Federation. By the time I get Allied, I usually get a progression mission too. Then, I move on. You can't go higher than Allied with a group. I'm up to Warrant Officer with Federation now.
I actually started doing this with Empire now too. It seems to be about the same.
I mostly do trade missions since the combat ones are a bit buggy and just take a while to do all the USSs. I believe bounty hunting and even just trading goods also help. But, the missions are better, especially the charity ones.

Did you happen to make note of the actual faction within the Federation that offers the progression missions? If you did and know where they have the most influence, try there. That's how I had to get my Alioth System Permit, it wasn't Allied with Alliance, it was Allied with Alioth Independants, a faction within the Alliance. Could be the same for the Federal Navy.
Yeah, the stations I'm allied with are operated with controlling factions allied to the federation. The last mission I got simply popped up after 24 hours in the same station I obtained the previous one...but seriously, 24 hours? What is going on? Seems to take forever to find rank progression missions.
What I meant was the minor faction that controls the Navy Progression Missions, if that's a thing, I have no experience with those so I'm sure Yokai's guide was much more helpful. Hopefully it had your answer.

It isn't a minor faction, it is the Federal Navy.
Interesting read Yokia. But I have one question, I was a Chief Petty Officer in the Federation when the gods rolled my rank progression mission to Warrant Officer. I run the mission succeed, come back to the station and get a progression mission again. Do the mission, succeed. No rank progression, why? I just find it odd.
Major Faction - Empire, Alliance, Federation
Minor Faction - Alioth Independents, Sol or Federal (whatever here), Imperial (whatever here)
If the "Federal Navy" is a faction in the game, it is a Minor Faction under the Federation since it is not separate from the Federation.
