Finding nearest stations

I am sorry if this has been answered in the past, but how can I find the nearest stations I can dock?
Also is there a proper way to get into super cruise and head towards your target?
I usually enter super cruise and then look at the distance towards my target increasing or decreasing to figure out if I am heading the right direction than maneuver around to find my locked location but sometimes it overlaps with other planets etc in the way.
Anyways I was just curious if I am doing this right or if there is a simpler easier way to navigate and find your direction ones in super cruise.

Thanks :)

Your compass just above the central radar. Thin yellow line means behind, thick yellow means infront. You want a thick yellow line in its centre.

You need to go to the left screen, press 1 on key row abowe Q.
In the screen menus go to the left menu called navigation.
It will have expanded the contact list of the system you are in.
use arrows to scroll down and select the one called *****dock
Return to front view. At about 2 oclock above the scanner there is a
small compas. all you need is to steer until it is centered. Then you also should see
a large red circle indicated in the distance with the dock name and distance.
If not then be aware that the compas have a small dot on when you are pointing
away from selected target. just turn 180 until the dot is large and centered and the
red circle with dock name should appear.
When pointing at the target. Hit c and wait a few sec for supercruice to charge.
then slam the throttle all the way forward to enter supercruise.
The speed indicator will now show your velocity in lightspeedfactor or high speed km/psec
when you approach the speedfactor automatic tone down a bit, and when you arrive
you should idealy be within 200km and below 200km/sec
you can check that on the lower left side of the central cockpit view.

Good luck

Note that this will only work if you actually have the station locked in the first place.
Yeah I have to find the stations first, in the list I usually see the planets and "unknown signal" or "distress signal" but not the actual stations.
So I was just curious for example if I am out at a distress signal how do I find the nearest station to dock

I seriously did not know what that small circular compass thing was I feel so dumb :(

It's not dumb, an awful lot of us played the original Elite 30 years ago and that came with a 40 page manual.

Most of the HUD comes from there as well and although I have had a learning curve I can only wonder people who have come to this new must feel even learning everything without any form of documentation.

I was pretty young at the time of the original Elite but I do remember it. Not the hud elements specifically but the vector triangle looking ships :)
Either way I appreciate the help and yes a manual would be really useful for this game. Lots of things to learn

And to get the right speed, there is a blue 'sweet spot' on your speed indicator on the right of the radar.
Keep your throttle in this area when close to the target and it will slow you down to a controllable speed to disengage the jump.
I have found that even going 10%-20% over the desired speed still slows you down enough, but it can be a bit of a hairy ride towards the end.

So just to be clear there is currently no way to select a station from the contact list and jump to it, you have to jump/super cruise to a planet and find a station from there?

The way I see it is you 'Jump' to the system, near the sun; and then Super Cruise to the station you've locked onto which is invariably next to a planet.

If you move out of the ecliptic it's easier to see the different targets.

Just look up and down that navigation list on the left hand panel, and then select it to lock it as your navigation target. It will have some name that identifies it and IIRC its icon is distinctive also, although I don't tend to pay attention to that, only its name. ;)

Ok
What if I am already in the system.
Let's say I am at one of the distress signal sites and want to dock at the nearest planet for repairs or upgrades.
Do I engage supercruise and fly to the nearest planet to see the stations or is there a way to select a station from my contact list right from the get go?

Oh okay so it should be listed on there, I have to pay more attention to the names than.
Thanks

Yup to condense it down for you

When I first enter the system I put the star somewhere behind me (as denoted by the thin bar on the navigation spot)

I then throttle up for a few lightseconds and head away just for some breathing space and then throttle down)

Then I push 1 (default key) which brings up the contacts list and then using W for up and S for down (defaults) move up and down the contacts lists.

The stations will be named as stated as Azeban City, Beagle 2 station, Dehan Gateway... something like that

when you get to the station highlighted press SPACE (default) and that locks the radar to that station, press 1 to come back to the HUD.

Then you orientate the ship so that the thick yellow bar is in the center of the navigation spot and it should be also highlighted on the HUD in the center of the screen.

Then throttle up so that on the thrust indicator the little bubble is highlighted blue, this gives you a safe optimal acceleration profile to get to your destination.

Fly to the station and when you get within 200km of the station you should be under 200lkm/sec speed hit the C key (default) and you should pop out of cruise with the station near you.

Hope that helps, the best way I think will be for people to try things out and learn as they go.

Thanks
I am using TrackIR so I just have to look at those side panels and select the option I want. I was just confused with the stations on that contact list.

Just wanted to thank you all again for the help.
I did manage to find the station in the list last night.
You were right the station is in the list just it wasn't that obvious at first glance.

Now that I know what the little circular instrument is beside my radar it is really easy to find my locked targets too whether they are enemy ships or stations etc.

In the mean time I've managed to talk one of my friends into buying Elite Premium Beta, by showing him some youtube vids I've done during some single player scenarios. :)
I am spreading the word wherever I can, Frontier well deserves all the support they can get.
