Finding platinun palladium when mining.

Where do I get the best chance of finding valuable metals when mining?

I've jumped to "metal rich" areas and prospected hundreds of asteroids, but found next to nothing. Do I just keep darting rocks in the area, or should I jump to a new one where I may have more luck?

Metallic rings is where you want to be looking in. not Metal Rich. Most preferably with "Pristine Reserves".

You will need to mine in pristine metalic rings
Jura 7 is were I mine most ofmthe time
EDDB have a list of pristine metalic rings

HIP 16607 has those pristine metallic rings you're looking for as well. It's my totally secret spot I never told anyone about. Shhhhhhh

How do i tell if a ring is "Pristine", or not?
Look in the System Map. Select the planet in question, then go to the "Info" tab on the left column. At the bottom of the planet information, it will say "Pristine reserves," or "Common reserves," or sometimes "Depleted reserves." Then it will list information about each of the rings; you want one of the rings (almost always the A ring, the first one and closest to the planet) to be "Metallic."

Here's a screenshot from a system showing how that info appears: http://imgur.com/xfzI5S2

I second Simpleye's recommendation of Jura. It has a station not too far away from the pristine rings, and if you get bored with mining you can easily switch to doing some bounty handing in the hazardous RES or do some Empire-affiliated missions. It's all good.

Otherwise, the CIMA prospectors maintain a database of pristine metallic ring systems, and you can find the closest ones to you.

Don't forget though, if you don't have the system info you will be told how the reserves are, but not the ring type, so either detailed scan of said planet or buy the info and hope for the best :)

Do you just dump everything else? If so, how do you keep the collectors from picking back up?

Yes....everything else gets dumped.
I close my cargo hatch, jettison unwanted material, then use thrusters to move down.
The ship will cause the canisters to explode (even if a collector limpet has it - but this action does not harm the limpet)

How long did it take to get all that?

This trip I got pretty lucky with Platinum....almost every asteroid was full of it....about 40 minutes once inside the Haz Res at Delkar 7.....hovered around 18 to 22 from Haz Res and only had to fight 2 Cobras and 1 crazy little sidewinder during the trip.
