Fine for Jettisoning illicit cargo? What?

Hey all,

So, new account and I just got fined for jettisoning Illicit cargo, here's what happened...

I was in a HighRes and deployed collector limpets to collect materials after a Wanted NPC was killed. However, as I have no filters set some illicit cargo was collected - assume it was from the popped NPC. I immediately ejected it upon seeing the "Illicit Cargo" in the lower right of the HUD. No worries. However, moments later I get a 250cr FINE for ejecting this cargo. I ejected it so I'd not get in trouble. So what the hell is this rubbish?

If I'd ejected it at a station, fine, that's daft. However, in open space after my Limpets accidentally collected it? I ejected it so I'd NOT get fined - which would happen if I was scanned with it onboard of course. However, I was not scanned but got the fine upon ejecting it.

I've never seen this before and I've of course picked up illicit cargo that the pirate I just killed was carrying due to over zealous collector limpets. Without the ability to say "Don't collect illegal stuff numpty" - a feature that should have been with us the day limpets were introduced - this sort of thing will happen. Hoping as this is just a fine I'll not get a load of rubbish happen when trying to pay it off.

Has anyone else had this ridiculous situation occur for them? It's really spoilt this evening play as stuff like this annoys me.

You get fines for entering stations with illicit cargo?

Joke aside, a fast entry to the station (Not autodock) generally solves the scanning issue. Flog them off, they are 100% profit.

Erm, yes, but that makes sense. I was in a HighRes and my Limpets collected some illicit cargo (I cannot filter between valid and illicit) which I promptly ejected - while still in the HighRez - and I got fined for it. Silly.

Well tbh it happenned to me before , killed some pirate , set my limpets on automode for materials , and ended up with alot of illicit cargo , resulting in security attacking /fining me.

It's kinda lame , but i understand where does this system comes from (for smart people that jettison before scan end :p )

To counter that i ignored all thing that i encoutered and was not materials. But sad you dont have a mode that does not take illicit cargo for limpets.

It's something totally out of our control in practical terms though. I mean, we cannot mark anything not for collection until we see it for the first time. The Illicit cargo was a Fragment, so the Pirate NPC had evidently killed / robbed a Miner at some point. That one fragment I ejected and got fined for it, and I would have got fined for not ejecting it. No way I could come out ahead there.

If the game actually had robust filter options that we could set beforehand, then it'd be better. I mean, just a simple checkbox with "Pick up illicit cargo" would save so much trouble and it'd be a tiny thing programmatically - unless there's something really nasty with the code base.

Another thing, I thought they fixed the issue ages ago where a limpet would pick up something the player had just ejected? I thought this hadn't been a thing for years, yet my limpets insist on collecting, again, things that I just ejected - unless I then add them to the ignore list.

lol yeah it must've been in the presence of a system authority ship?

There were a few buzzing around, yes. Still a bit rude! I mean, I dropped it before they had the chance to scan me and complain.

I might bloody well KEEP the cargo next time and fence it somewhere...

You could have assumed a wanted NPC (a pirate) in a res site was carrying dodgy stuff.

In your left panel you have the opportunity and could have seen the cargo before you took it on board and “ignored” it.

As clunky a mechanic as it seems it doesn’t seem that far fetched, and you could have “put it together”.

I generally collect it all, getting rid of it is never a problem, OK, I got fined once, just need to enter the station at speed.

Well, I helped blow him up and my already deployed Limpets just went for it. There simply was not time from the "pop" to go to the left panel and see what was scattered around.

Interesting, I have been checking what's been dropped in "Contacts" before I deploy fresh limpets. However, weirdly, I did check earlier after popping a ship and just materials were listed. I was stationary and sent out the limpets, moments later "Illicit Cargo". It seems that some cargo - which wasn't showing when I checked (yes, I scrolled down) - was somehow in range of my Limpets. I ejected it - no Security ships nearby - and they picked them up again, so I had to block the cargo in question. Dead clunky really.

Dunno if my local station has a Black market....hmm, it does but it says "Service Restricted"...not sure what that means.

Btw: what is the penalty for Illicit cargo? If I'm fined for not keeping it, will they shoot if I've actually got it in my hold?

So, throwing drugs out of the car while passing the police? This not a crime? How are they to know you just picked it up by the side of the road, as far as they are aware you spotted a police car coming your way and are throwiing away the evidence before you can be searched. No I don't usually go for car analogies, but if you eject illicit cargo in range of the police scanners yes they are going to know about it and consider you one of the bad guys!

The fine was a couple of hundred credits, I didn't have much. I've only been shot at if I botch the approach to the station and hit someone. Apart from that, it's all fairly straightforward,

It's fairly simple, if you are in range of authority scanners you will get fined, and really it's not much of a fine is it, I mean as far as C&P goes it's like getting a slap on the wrist for what would be a serious crime in real life. I mean if they wanted to model the C&P based on real life crimes most CMDR's would serving 20 to life in the brig by now, but it is a game so I consider the minor punishments we get as suitable for the fact that it is, in the end, just a game.
