Finished my first "Deep Space" expedition: Kremainn to HIP 88838 and back

So after earning my first million and some change blowing up wanted vessels in the RES zones of Kremainn, I had the urge to explore. After reading the forums I decided I had to have a Diamondback Explorer as I didn't want to continue turning in bounties until I had the 5 million for an Asp. I plotted a course to Wolf 406 to pick up my Explorer. After purchasing it I only had a couple hundred thousand credits to kit it out so it is basically stock. I did pick up a slightly better FSD increasing jump range to 17ly and added a couple extra fuel tanks and a fuel scoop. After reading in Reddit that the largest star discovered so far was in HIP 88838 I decided I had to see it. I plotted the ~750ly thinking it would be a good break in distance to discover if I enjoyed exploration and set out.

As I was only equipped with the basic discovery scanner and I wanted to practice my skills picking out system objects against the background it took me several 3 hour sessions over a couple of days to get to the big red giant that was my goal, exploring the 60+ systems I passed through on my way there as thoroughly as possible. I must say I was very impressed with size of HIP 88838 and it's system. I then plotted my course back, running into a stream of brown dwarfs with a couple scoopable stars peppered throughout the plotted course. I hate to say that by this point I was feeling very lazy and just honked my horn once in the systems I came across on my way home. Upon reaching my home station I dropped off my data and received my payout....500k credits.....but with many first discovery's listed (I evidently scanned a lot of asteroid clusters, icy planets, and moons that others missed or ignored)...Seeing the congratulatory box pop up made my day. I know in the time I spent I could have easily made a few million killing wanted ships at an RES, but my name wouldn't be on a piece of this game, and I wouldn't have had the thrill of seeing that little spot I though was moving actually turning into a ringed system with many moons surrounding it. I think I'm going to invest in a better FSD, Intermediate scanner, and surface scanner and get back out there. I've got a fever and the only prescription is more discoveries.

You've been bitten by the exploration bug now... welcome to the club! :)

I have a 5 point checklist for exploration ships:
  • A class FSD (for range)
  • A class Power Plant (to manage heat better)
  • Best fuel scoop you can afford (to save time refueling)
  • Advanced Discovery Scanner + Detailed Surface Scanner (to scan anything you want in a system)
  • D class modules for everything else (to save weight and extend range)
Anything else is up to you. Yes, there is a cost associated with those modules but they will see you well through to the other side of the galaxy if you wanted.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not very flush with credits right now so I'm having to take it slow. Going to try a 3kly loop next, never going more than 1kly coreward from my home system. I am hoping to be able to fund Class A FSD and Power plant with the proceeds. Only getting 17ly per jump on the current fsd so that should net me ~180 systems to sell when I get back using the fastest routes.

You could also look into fitting out a Cobra for speed and cargo and run a rare trade loop...I know of a loop that yields ~1.3M credits per trip.

Relatively quick and easy credits to fund your deep space exploration rig and set up, if you're interested.

If it was me, which it isn't, blaze your own trail and all that, I'd sell the DBX and get this - http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70f,,2-3I3m4s2C3m5K5A,4zW7OWmpT2UI2jw

Spend two to three weeks getting the hang of exploring by which time you could/might/will make enough to re-buy the DBX
and fit it out to your taste, ready for longer journeys into the black.

You have to be more careful with your route planning because the Adder doesn't have the reach the DBX has (8t fuel tank v 32t) and it will never
match a fully kitted out DBX's jump range (26 LY v 33/35 LY) but for approx half the cost of the DBX's A5 FSD it is a more than capable explorer.

It might just be me though, after spending a considerable time in the black I like to use ships that most people wouldn't look twice
at for exploring. I've got a kitted out Asp Explorer and I've recently bought an Anaconda for exploring and yet I'm currently
exploring in my Eagle.

It takes all sorts, so do whatever you find the most fun.

Eagle Explorer? That is almost certainly a very rare choice.

I put it down to an excess of alcohol

Made 3 million credits with her in the last three days, got back to Goldstein Port tonight. 32 credit repair bill was a bit steep though :D

Because of the type of explorer I mostly am I don't actually need anything other than the small ships, although I do have
a fully kitted out Asp and an Anaconda in a hanger somewhere, for when I choose to go to the outer rim(s).

Here she is with the fit out:

If you don't mind 200 jumps per 1,000LY (and I don't) then she's more than capable. My favourite ship in the game really.
