FIRE AT WILL! How safe am I to use this function?

If I change my turret from "TARGET ONLY" to "FIRE AT WILL" will it only shoot at hostile 'red' targets?

Of will it randomly spray 'clean' and 'law enforcement' subjecting me to the bizarre injustices of the current bounty system?

It would be good to have a weapon that engages the other targets in a wing but not if its going to get me 'WANTED'!

It'll shoot at any red target. Keep in mind that not all hostile targets have a bounty on their heads, and you could become a criminal without wanting it.

Assuming I'm 'clean' would the 'red' target not have become wanted when it started shooting at me?

"Hey, where's Riker?"

Lol! This is exactly the scenario I'm afraid of!

As I understand, FaW turrets will always check for crime before shooting. I'm not a turret user so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I use a full 8 turret set-up on my Anaconda Colonel North, I have used the ''Fire at Will'' choice for ages now and the turrets are now much smarter than before, that does not mean they are ''perfect'', as they will not fire on a red ''wanted'' pilot until they fire on you or until after you may have scanned them for a bounty I think too.
So I have had a couple of problems, first was Anacondas interdicting me then NOT firing on my ship once we are head to head in a staring contest, they just sat there until I selected ''target only'' and blasted away manually, now that is all ok, but if you are facing a couple of opponents then I like the turrets to fire independently so they can fire on different targets at the same time with the use of ''fire at will'' Oliver......hope that helps out chap.
Yes they work well, yes I use that setting, yes you will get NPC and real CMRs who are ''wanted'' but not until they fire on you will the turrets act in the ''fire at will'' setting.....Colonel.....Sir......Oliver....great court case that was on T.V. sir.

I think it's best used in combat zones or military strikes where everyone is forced to one side or another and crime checks are not needed.

I use some turrets, i think if you have at least one or more fixed/gimballed weapons that can help with having turrets set to fire at will, as after you fire a few shots, the turrets start firing.

I used turrets in the past (before they got 'fixed') and they did indeed shoot at ships that didn't have bounties, which made me Wanted repeatedly for assault.
I wouldn't trust them now either, since you can get Wanted status even for shooting ships that are shooting at (AND hitting) you. At least when you use gimballed/fixed you can see the Wanted notification pop up, and you can stop shooting. Otherwise you'd have to retract hardpoints.

I now have some turrets on my Anaconda and had a chance to test exactly this problem a few days ago. On my way through "enemy territory" (an opposing power) I was under attack from a vessel of this very Power. It shot at me so I deployed my turrets - they did NOT shoot, as the target was basically "illegal" - if I had fired my gimballed weapons at this ship I would have gotten a bounty.

Turrets are now actually useful as they just won't fire at illegal targets unless you (YOU) fire first. :)

I was a turret virgin until 3 days ago, and i have to say on the right ship I love them.

in a RES they never committed any crimes, but they happily chewed up a bunch of ships attacking me leaving me to mine away without even moving my ship.

thier accuracy is not great - even with A level scanner (not sure it matters) and if I get more than 2 even low level ships attacking me i need to actually think about fighting back, but for the most part, they are free money generators :)

2 class 3 turreted bursts and 1 class 2 turreted beam on a python is just the ticket against AI in n RES.

Depends what he is flying and how good a pilot will is
Yeah... about that

Yea since I am not pledged to anyone but I am a high rank Admiral Federation I have noticed that when I get interdicted now after not being pledged I am nearly 95% of the time in the right of fire because they have stopped me and are firing first so my turrets have a legal clean kill. When you are pledged you have troubles with the territory you are in and who is firing at you so your turrets may not always fire, good in some instances but not in all, personally I can quickly look at my right hand U.I. with my Track I.R. and switch to ''Target only'' if I need to select a ship individually so I do not buy gimballed weapons now for the Anaconda because turrets can track targets better and for longer with more guns firing at different targets than gimballed weapons only firing on the one opponent you have chosen.
I think the trade off is really that do you want the slightly higher power of a gimballed weapon or the 15 to 20% less power of a turret but with the brain of an independent gun capable of thinking on it's own now chaps.
