The Story
(1907)
The Devereaux Mining Institute was once the leaders in precious metal and mineral excavation with sites spreading far and wide.
that was until 1905 and they brought Sanderson Caves after a tip off from a local mining firm that was going under.
The caves were sold at a steal prices and the Devereaux Mining Institute began work immediately.
Before long the shaft tower was blazing the skyline and hillsides excavated for the new jewel of the Devereaux crown.
Just days before the mine was due to open workers began complaining of dizzy spells and sickness.
Doctors could not fathom the illness and were only lead to one answer and an unorthodox one at that... possession..?
Had some dark entity been released from the depths below,Was the team truly loosing there minds?
Little did these people know the truth behind the plague that had befell them ..the caves were sold cheap for one reason..
Natural gases were pouring from the caves below after being breached from the excavation, not enough to ignite but just enough to effect the miners senses.
But Jack Devereaux was a harsh slave driver of boss who wasted no time at the expense of his labourers, He wanted the mines finished and time was running out, so in his haste he ordered explosives be brought into the caves to get the job done..the explosives were detonated and the mines were formed but with the leaking gas that was permeating the caves it came at a cost..the shaft tower was left badly damaged and with days left to present the crowing achievement panic set in.. He ordered a separate team closer to his organisation to come in at night and to patch up the worst of the damage...
Jack was a man of his word and true to his estimates the mine was presented 3 days later.. Crowds gathered to watch the first team descend from the shaft tower into the mines below.. the gear wired and clanked and the shaft tower began to creak.. something was wrong, drastically wrong, at the pinnacle of the tower the miners sat crested waiting to make there decent.. then it happened..the gears steamed the , the tower shuddered and a fire erupted from the mines within igniting 2 barrels of explosives left at the edge! and with a almighty bang the gears and cables snapped sending the mine car plummeting at high speed into the mine below..leaving only a trail of smoke behind...and sound of faint screams...the area was evacuated and the mine left abandoned..Jack Devereaux was ruined...
(1970)
In the 70s an investigation into the area began a new look into the 1907 distaster, Before long it was made clear of the gases that were leaking from the mines below.
In fear of effecting the locals only a few miles away a new project was started, A mission to stem the gas leaks away from the mines and restore the shaft tower.
This daring feat required miles of pipework and specialist tanks placed around the area. Finally the mines gases were contained once again.
After exploring back into the old Sanderson Caves now known as the Devereaux mines a fateful decision was made.. can we learn from the 1907 disaster and reopen this mine once again.
Truth be told the mine was an engineering masterpiece and if reinvigorated maybe just maybe the failing economy of the local towns could once again prosper..
A new more modern up to date mining apparatus was designed and installed onto the old shaft guide tracks, Featuring open seating over 3 rows, this would be the new face of modern mining..
And on April 4th 1977 the Devereaux mine was ready to initiate once again..
The press were in full force infront of the once ill fated shaft tower and a countdown was started. The new mine cars awaiting to disembark the loading zone.
At the press launch the mystery benefactor of the project stepped forward...Thomas Devere
The signal was given and the dispatch was initiated , for the first time since 1907 the gears turned and the shaft tower came alive as the new mining car traversed the lift.
As the car crested the tower once again an almighty screech filled the air.. the gears had jammed ..the new cars were much heavier than old ones the mechanisms were loosing a battle against the pull.
All of a sudden the earth began to tremble...surely not another explosion, surely history would not repeat its self so many years away..Thomas Devere began to panic shouting that pipes would not hold and that intimidate evacuation was needed. Screws could be heard pinging away from metal around them, But not from the shaft tower this time but the pipe work around the area..then with one almighty hiss the gas ripped through the pipes in an explosion of fire culminating in an eruption at the base of the tower.. and true as history would repeat itself once again the car came crashing to the ground...Thomas was caught in the blast ...his last words before passing away.. "We should have learnt from the past"....
Thomas Devere was later discovered to have cut corners with the work using unfit pipes and quick fixes..his last words seemed cryptic until it was revealed that Devere was the shortened version of his family name... Devereaux....
(2017)
A hundred years have since past since the 1907 disaster but the mines still sit open to this day, rumour has it that the old rolling stock that remains still sits awaiting dispatch...
Dare you enter the old Devereaux mine now known locally as the FireMine...still to this day the metals and minerals sit untouched ready for anyone to obtain..but with only one way into the mine and a history of disaster, are you brave enough to disembark on the route that took many lives before...?
