Newcomer / Intro First 100,000CR

I've managed to scratch together my first 100,000CR doing trade runs and bulletin missions, but it's been a real grind so I'm looking for advice on how to wisely spend my hard earned without wasting it. I'm thinking either

Upgrade my bare bones Sidewinder (maybe for mining)
Buy a Hauler
Upgrade my as yet unused Freagle for bounty hunting.
Keep the money to invest in a better ship further down the line (really want a Cobra but it seems far off :()

All I have done so far is commodity trading, some exploration and non-combat bulletin missions. As I said, I find earning money very hard. Is bounty hunting or even pirating any more profitable? Thanks in advance.

Use the Freagle, buy a couple of minor upgrades (power plant, distributor and top gimballed MC maybe) and an FSD interdictor and go hunting some 10k-30k bounties while doing the "kill pirate" BB missions. Should make 70K an hour or so if you get a couple of decent bounties.

Bounty hunting is a lot mor profittable, and trading in illegal/stolen/found goods! I managed to score 50,000cr picking up 4 tubs of a "jelly" which sold for 13,000 each!!! you just have to be careful not to get scanned too often, but a 2,000cr fine is worth a 50,000 haul!

I've got a decked out eagle and 50,000cr now and i'm generally doing bounty hunter missions and stopping at "unknown signal sources" they tend to be hit and miss, but you can get both good haul and bounty missions in those!

Always worth a lookout for abandoned cargo around space stations!!

I would say buy an Adder. It is better upgradable than Hauler (will last longer) and also better armed. (You can even do bounty hunting in it, if you like)
Once in Adder, you can easily continue with what you do now, just on higher level with better profits.

If you have, say, 20T cargo space, the missions are much much better. :)

Thanks for the tips guys. I'l have a think, I really cant afford to blow it all carelessly.

Are ships and upgrades cheaper at systems with more tech orientated economies?

I like the Adder idea, but the bounty hunting in your Freagle will probably pay off quickest. Just make sure you leave enough cash in the pot to pay your insurance cost.

Bounty hunting is all good, but from what I understood, OP wants something a bit more safe. Bounty hunting can earn a lot of money very quickly, but also burn all your reserves even quicker.

Adder is great for almost everything. It can have a nice cargo space, which is great for midde-size haul missions and general trading/smuggling.
Plus it has two small and one middle sized hardpoint so with C2 Beam or multicannon it can have one hell of a punch when necessary. Better than Eagle.
Personally I like trading with bits of exploring with occasional bonus bounty from interdictions by (very surprised and very dead) pirates. :D

Some options for where you are on the cash/ship curve:

- Buy a Hauler or and Adder, outfit it for cargo, and do a bunch of missions. The extra cargo space will let you get the bigger hauling missions, and you'll quickly become friendly if you stick near a particular station.

- Outfit a combat ship and go hunting pirates for their bounties and cargo

- Outfit a ship for long-range travel and fill it up with rare commodities. You're at about the right size where you can easily fill up your cargo completely. Must be willing to risk traveling 150 ly.

- Find a black market with no security forces and loot USS and similar sources of salvage

High-tech or industrial systems will have a wider selection of modules available, but I haven't noticed if they're cheaper.

I wouldn't buy a new ship yet. I would upgrade the power plant and power distributor first. It's AMAZING how much upgrading your power does! You can shoot nearly continuously and boost twice if you change your power pips at the appropriate times. If you haven't gotten one yet, get a shield cell. This lets you recharge your shield instantly before it goes down.

When you eventually decide to upgrade your ship, you get full credits for any upgrades you buy, so don't fret.

There are so many bugs with trading right now that I would not recommend do it. Stay with bounty hunting; remove your cargo hold and replace it with something useful. If you do get killed, it's pretty cheap to replace your sidewinder as most of the parts are loaned to you anyways. You can check your replacement cost on the panel on the right. I would highly recommend you find a planet with rings and a station in orbit. Go to the extraction sites to do your bounty hunting, fly back to the station for repairs, claim your vouchers, and reloading. There's a lot of policing in the extraction sites, so you have backup there if you need them. The NPCs generally let you have the last shot so you get the kill. Just be careful not to shoot them though, as you will get a "wanted" tag, which you will have to pay off at the station to remove.

edit: I just wanted to add that bounty hunting is sooo much easier if you learn to master how to use lateral and vertical thrusters. Remember, you're not flying in earth's atmosphere - you're not limited to pitch and yaw. You're in space and you can do so much more with your thrusters. I can take expert Cobras in my little sidewinder by just staying out of his firing arc. My weapons of choice are a gimbaled pulse laser and a gimbaled cannon. Use the cannon when you're close to the target.

Whats the average purchase price of an Adder? I don't think I've seen one at any shipyards yet.

About 88k for an Adder. They're a good solid ship - 8T fuel in it so you can travel a lot.

They are fairly agile and have a lot of room to upgrade them in various ways. I'm an explorer so mine is going that route but the starting 6 cargo isn't bad.

Actually I wouldn't consider 8T fuel tank an advantage for exploring. It adds lots of weight to your ship and decreases your jump range.
I'd reccomend downgrading to 4T + some lightweight fuel scoop (possibly C grade)

Can you guys recommend a good starter loadout for bounty hunting in the Eagle? Im thinking somehting like k-Warrant scanner, chaff or shield cell, maybe power plant/distributor upgrade as recommended above. Not sure one weapons, maybe one of each weapon type (thermal/projectile/missile) if it has the hardpoints.

Move the 2 pulse lasers to the bottom mounts and buy a gimballed MC for the top. Even if you don't need the MC it's still good practice for using one later.

Shield Cell if you need it otherwise you might want to think about keeping some cargo space just to do the "find x" missions, or when your victims start throwing away stuff like superconductors just to stop you from killing them (happens to me a lot). Careful you don't get scanned before you sell it all then of course.

Get yourself a hauler dump your shield generator and scanner and you can get your cargo hold upto 22T, I don't worry about getting interdicted cos even if you have shields they aren't in the slightest bit a fighting vessel so your dead anyway :)
