First attempt at Sgr A* .. turning back

So yeah.. I totally and utterly enjoy exploration and sightseeing in this game.. I know some other parts of the game are unfinished.. but... so what? :D

Since I can't stand trade grinding, I have been doing NPC bounty hunting and Rares Runs, (made exciting and less profitable by CMDR Pirates), to finance my Cobra to go to Sgr A*.. and so I finally set off some days ago....
.. but unfortunately I have to turn back now, at 9k ly from Sol. Hull at 60%.... problem is too poor jump range.. I do soo much scooping, accidents are bound to happen...
This ends in a Great Failure... but still... it has been awesome... on my way I have seen an unclaimed binary pair of Earthlike planets... I hope I get to put my name on those!... :)

Point of my post:
The game is awesome!...
Sure, my project for the last week has failed, and I have to return home early... but who cares?!... so much beauty out there to see!...

A few last points:
Congrats to Erminus for making it back to civilisation with the Beagle!
Shout Out to R4nger0 for doing his crazy stuff in a Sidewinder!
Congrats to Nutter for all his cool exploration trips!...

The three of you all inspired me to go on my trip... who cares I had to give it up, my Cobra was under-equipped to begin with... and I had indeed had a few beers when I rammed it into the gravity well of a white dwarf.... but so what?!... I'll be back!-..... :)

The positivity of this post is so refreshing to hear amongst all the negativity that has plagued this forum since release. Kudos for trying to get so far, you'll make it next time :)

It's a shame, but don't worry. One day. :)
I hope you're scanning like mad on your way home to make the journey profitable, at least ;)

Well, depends. Better FSD can make "highway trips" shorter, which is definitely nice.
But as far as scooping security goes, good fuel scoop is even more important. Mine can scoop at almost full capacity without exceeding 100 percent heat, which allows me to be in very safe distance from the star. I refuel like your average driver would (aka "accidents happen") but since I bought the biggest, meanest hydrogen funnel in the galaxy, I haven't had a problem. :D

Are you not paying attention to your temps? Idk it might help, but it doesnt matter how your ship is oriented to the the star to scoop.

Always look at your temp before you hit the FSD charge, and when you park for the night make sure you've supercruised around to the right side of the star you plan to depart from.

I didn't realize at first but if you throttle down when you're jumping, you come out at a standstill. Then you can slowly move into the corona to scoop. I used to blast in there way too fast and got burned a lot.

Safe travels home!! Next trip, you can go farther!

You can make it to Sgr A*

With the credits from your "I nearly made it" run, you should be able to buy an Asp, fit it out with a B5 FSD, scoop and scanners.

I made a test run out to Beta Lyrae in such a ship, and apart from a mistake learning to fuel scoop after my first jump out from Anlave (my home system), the trip went fine.

Of course my Asp has been upgraded since...... but only because I break the boredom of a long rares run by stopping to shoot down wanted people ;)

Bill

And I'm off to Sgr A* when I can finally afford an A5 FSD (crashing into stations while having 1.1 million in cargo does'nt help that cause :D )

Don't buy an Asp, you don't need it to get to Sag A*. I'm in my trusty Cobra, 10,000 LY from SOL heading for Sag A right now.

Unarmed.
A4 FSD
A4 FS
C1 ADS
With this load out you can go anywhere, and it's cheap(ish) to insure and replace if you crash and burn.

My other bit of advice is don't scan systems close to home unless it's safe. Just jump like a nutter (pun intended) till there are no NPCs to be seen.

And this load out has helped me get to Ranger. I'm not coming back until I have enough data to get to Elite.
I'll be back at Christmas then!

Good Luck CMDR!

I turned back twice im on my third time lucky run at about 3.5k from Sagittarius A,
I think my mistake was scanning stuff near known space, this lead to interdictions and damage, since I couldnt fight or run so third time I plotted 1k out and did no exploring till I was away and free of NPC, now Iv not seen a ship in 5 days and im at 71%.

I'm 40k ly's into a long trip atm, and i've been knocked out of super cruise twice so far so i'm at 96% hull atm, both times due to messing about with voice attack around neutron stars :) Anyway, my recipe for success regarding keep the ship intact is to shut the throttle while in hyperspace, then scan the planet, fire the space horn, line up the next destination be it a jump or a scan and if i'm scooping then i do it at a tangent to the sun, NOT a perpendicular, its give much much greater control over how deep into the corona you go and how quickly you let your temperature rise.

pro diagram i did in paint! -

Hope that helps you keep your cobra tickety boo on your next trip.

Excellent diagram there sir! Have some rep.

but it doesnt matter how your ship is oriented to the the star to scoop.

A common misconception. Pointing away from the star reduces scoop amount tremendously.

It is true, though, that it doesn't matter where you are pointing if you're pointing towards the hemisphere pointing towards the star (anywhere from parallel to sphere edge towards the center of the star)

I don't know if this is my imagination or not, but I find that I can scoop faster if I yaw at the same time as skirting the star, and the temperature never seem to go above 98 degrees.

Great post, exploring is about the enjoyment and going where no commander has been before! Well done on the binary earths, lets hope you tag em ;)

+1

Also +1 for the fuel scoop diagram! :D

Not your imagination, I've found the same. Learned to surf those coronas on my way to Sag A, went to 35% in the process, but haven't lost a percent on the way back.

Ride the corona pushing the stick ever slightly forward to keep the yellow line just below the horizon, and apply rudder control to skim from left to right. You'll always be in the full scoop, and finish it in just 4-5 seconds. Keep it below 110% (smoke is ok).
