First Boom Mission and I was Banjaxed

Hi All.

So still learning the ropes and just started out in 'open' play. I took a mission to the Bootis system and Maher Station to drop some data off. But when I get there, thinking easy 10K credits... lo and behold I am not permitted to dock. Any ideas why...?

Too far away? All docking pads full (since you play in open)?
If it's the latter, you need to wait until one frees up, else try to log back to solo to dock (never tried that myself, but I just guess that would work)

In Open someone is probably at the station, using the dock :) Either go to solo to hand in, or wait...

(Note: NPCs also hog pads, though it's rarer in solo except at tiny outposts).

switching to 'solo' sounds like the way to go. this station only had a few pads by the looks of things. I just wanted to check before assuming the obvious. thanks for your input.

Maher is an outpost so there's limited pads available. They are probably occupied, so you can't dock yet. If it's an NPC they will clear quickly. If it's a commander then they might be a while. They might not be aware they are blocking the pad, send them a message.
Anyway keep resubmitting the docking request, once a pads open you should get permission

thanks CMDR.... all a great learning exercise.

One more thing - probably doesn't apply in this case, since it's unlikely that anyone on PS4 already progressed to a big ship - outposts only have small and medium pads. So if you arrive in a big ship (Anaconda, Type-9, iClipper/Cutter,...), you won't be able to dock. Ever.

But in this case the outpost will tell you to go away, so you will have a clue. One reason not to switch ships when you have missions in progress ;)

I have been wondering: when playing in Open, is the pad only occupied as long as the other player is sitting on it? Or does it remain occupied, even when the other player moves into the hangar?

1, Make sure you are within 7.5km of the station or your docking request will be rejected.

2, If you are within 7.5km of the station & it's rejected it's usually because (A) the bays are full or (B) the station doesn't like you (you are a wanted criminal or hostile to the owning faction).

If the bays are full you can either wait until one of the bays frees up or switch modes between open/private/solo (depending on the mode you are in) then approach the station again & request docking. Usually this will mean that docking permission will be granted & you can land safely then play on in the mode you are in or log out to the menu & switch back.

If you are a wanted criminal or hostile to the owning faction you may not want to hang about near the station.

What is a "boom" mission?

It's a misson that comes up when the local faction is in a state of boom. (You'll see it as something like "Boom Data Delivery") They're usually very lucrative too :)

I just started in solo doing little short missions and have noticed the boom mission they do pay better and sometime there shorter. I just want to haul legal, latter with some MUCH NEEDED experience I'll get a bit more daring, but for now, I am wanting to play it safe.
