Astronomy / Space First Earth-sized exoplanet in habitable zone confirmed

The first Earth-sized exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of another star has been confirmed by observations with both the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Gemini Observatory.

Cool!

I guess the...

...needs to be updated then.

*sigh*

Won't see it next week either then. :p

Given that our world resides right on the inside edge of our habitable zone, does that mean that the Thargoids would see us as heat-loving extremophiles?

'cos I'm feeling pretty darn Cardassian right about now.

Amazing

It's amazing. Was only a matter of time before we found this at the rate that new planets are being found.

200 billion stars in the Milkey Way. 100 billion Galaxies in the observable universe - life else where is a statistical certainty :)

It's amazing to think that there might have been someone all those years ago looking back at us at that very moment.

My problem with it is it's in orbit of a dwarf star... it's at the right place for life, but we don't know how this would work or planetary evolution in a post-main-sequence star.

Red dwarfs tend to be long-lived and stable, so you'd think they are good for planetary evolution.
Not that I'm an expert, of course. It grates using 'dwarfs' instead of 'dwarves' though.

Seem like a possible planet thats colder than Earth but warmer than mars, pity its 500ly away so way to hard at present tech to send a probe in Our Lifetime

I wonder how long before we finally figure out and enable ourselves to actually get going..... Because it's there.

That's our nature, and unless we fratricide ourselves we will eventually find the key. :)

Never. The age of reason is over. We're just gonna get more and more people that deny science coming along. They're so bold they don't even hide their ignorance anymore. They're crawling out of the woodwork in record numbers and standing together in defiance of logic and reason.

This is the best it's gonna get, enjoy it while you can.

Yep, I'm being a downer today. :p
