First experience in Open

I'm not sure if I've got this right or wrong. OP are you complaining that open is too hard or is this just a diary entry type post? As in this is my first attempt, this is my second and so on?

For my money you appear to want to get into battle in Open but it caught you by surprise just how fast the Vette took your shields down, you then made your escape. Personally that's how I'm reading it but your post isn't really very clear. It could be taken as a whine about how open is too tough. The thing is you also say "second pass" which I think means you were actively looking for and engaging in combat.

Clarity would probably mean far less agro (although I think most posts are just advice).

OP, please don't fly a battle fit FdL and then play the victim card. The worst thing that happened was that you found out your build was inadequate and that your skills harvesting woefully underpowered NPC's had not prepared you for the real thing; instead of looking at things negatively, instead view the episode as a good learning experience.

A couple other thoughts; don't expect people to hail you with any comms as it's just not practical. From the time I get interdicted in my FdL I'm gun's hot and boosting sideways full FA Off unleashing a barrage of G5 PA's at point blank range, and if your dumb enough to be typing something out while I'm doing it you might look up to see your second ring of shields disappearing. Getting witty in comms gives the trader time to hi wake (or "magically" hi wake in the case of certain types if you know what I'm saying). Also, your poor luck finding spawns in Open was just that; bad luck.

Seriously, does no one actually read what anyone writes? At no point did I play a "victim" card or complain about anything. If I accept that it is a sandbox environment, then I accept that someone else's idea of a good time is to attempt to slay anyone that comes near. I see lots on these forums about open, "griefers" and the lot, and having never played in open, I thought I would just pop in and have a look around. I recounted my experience here, and that is all. Yes, it was a CG system and a deliberate decision to try open in that system. I hear that it is very rare to run into anyone outside of a CG or busy system, and if I'm looking to give open a go over solo and interact with other players, and if open outside of a CG or busy system is no different than solo, then it makes little sense to "try open" in the middle of nowhere.

I was fully prepared for this type of scenario and it paid off. I didn't know which ship was interdicting me since there were so many in the immediate area, but yes, had I known that it was the corvette that got me I wouldn't have glanced back (again, we're talking about a difference of a few seconds at most, so this can't really be an issue.) He got off two salvos on me, one as I passed him (I reversed direction and boosted head on to buy some time in the event that it was an obvious mismatch) and the other after he turned around (again, his beams were heavily modded so it was hard to tell what was still working, and we were close enough to the planet or his ship that I was mass locked).

Not only am I not upset, but as I posted in my pervuous response, I would like to know what mods were on those weapons so that I know how best to engineer shields to defend against that kind of attack.

Please stop seeing drama or whining where there is none. I had an experience around a popular topic here and I posted my observations and asked a few questions, and nothing more.

Honest ly CMDR's I think some of the comments are a bit insinuating towards the OP.
What ever his reason for going into open, he clearly did so in the best kitted ship, in his opinion. Had he done otherwise the same CMDR's yelling now, would also be yelling.. So what is it ?

I certainly endorse what CMDR Sleutelbos writes : you need to completely engineer and outfit for PvP. Anything else will have you have no chance whatsoever. I dont like it either, but it is what it is.

That is ever true.

Not at any point in the OP did I read anything that could be interpreted as whining. he was wondering what open is like. He learned, how SOME of it can be.

Cheers CMDR's

While I am seeing that many posters here have misinterpreted your post, where you were just recounting your limited experience in Open and soliciting for feedback on the aggressor's setup, they are also providing some good advice.

It helps if you can identify potential aggressors prior to being interdicted (i.e., identifying hollow contacts on radar). Outmaneuvering them in SC is an effective counter-measure to avoid a dangerous situation. You can easily determine if a player's actions are potentially hostile because they will continually attempt to maneuver behind you to establish a tether.

That being said, if you are interdicted unexpectedly, you can hit your "target nearest threat" keybind (mine is bound to my flighstick on my Hotas) to quickly target your interdictor to see if it's an NPC or CMDR as soon as the interdiction begins. That allows you to determine if you want to fight it or submit and what tactics you'll deploy at the onset of the engagement.

I personally prefer to put 4 pips to shields at the beginning while I charge my High Wake and then switch to engines depending on how the engagement is playing out, but if your system works for you than keep at it.

Can't help you on the potential load-out of the hostile CMDR, don't have any Vette experience. I fly almost exclusively Open, lose a ship every now and again but that's usually due to me purposely engaging in combat instead of running away.

I hope you continue to make forays into Open, I find the potential dangerous interactions with other CMDRs adds to the excitement of what can sometimes become monotonous gameplay.

Also, bad Haz Res spawns were just bad luck.

I play in open all the time and while its no peaceful forest glade, its no den of wolves either.

The last player to try the 'interdict and use my AspX for target practise" routine failed badly.... mainly because his engineered FDL could'nt cope with an experienced blockade runner like me
Ok I had to high wake out with shields down and hull down to 45%, but he couldn't aim for toffee when I dumped heat sinks and went silent running before doing some FA off boosted turns...

In short, dont be afraid of open, the sort of encounter like the one you had is very rare (except at CGs), most of us openers will just say hi and only fire when fired on

Bill

PS that encounter was in the alien encounter area the day after the first one occurred..... dang popular or what lol:p

Well done OP.

You gave it a shot and didn't let all the rumour mongering stop you from having a shot.

You survived your first hostile interdiction and learned something about your fit v the current pvp meta (I hate meta stuff!!) but didn't lose anything so all good.

As for the RES spawns....all I can say is rng is random. I've had nights where all i see are the local cops and others where it's a turkey shoot and multi mil bounties just keep flowing.
I assume you already know how to reset the RES instance if it's not spawning for you.

I didn't see anything in your post that I would take as a whine or scare mongering and the people who are claiming that are probably just seeing it as there is a lot of it on the boards :(

I hope you travel in open a bit more as it does allow for a lot of 'emergent' gameplay other then what ED procedures give you.

I love the randomness of open but I often wander all the modes depending on my mood and if I want to grab some nice screenies :D

See you out in the black o7

I have a great time playing in Solo and see no need for open. Especially after hearing many stories like the OPs.

I spent hours in Open doing the CG at Yum Kamcani the other day. Come to think of it, I literally can't remember the last time I played in Solo.

My experience so far - not a single interdiction. No griefing, no ganking, no suicidewinders, no pirates. A couple of bumps when passing ships in the mail slot (due to my oversized Cutter), nearly all of which were followed by a polite apology from the player I scraped against.

I have also encountered other players in other non-CG systems (Sothis/Ceos, Fehu, Wu Guinagi, Shinrarta Dezhra, Sol, Engineer systems) - all contact has been polite and friendly.

I thought maybe this is just a regional issue (I'm in New Zealand, and we're a friendly bunch), but even when I play at a time that would match the evening/weekend of the UK and USA, my results are the same - no one has attacked me yet.

Now, I realise that by virtue of posting this message I am potentially painting a big target on myself, but I felt it was important to share my experiences. I've racked up thousands of hours in-game playing in Open, and all my encounters so far have been polite, friendly, and non-aggressive.

Kudos to the OP, for getting away from that Vette, if you think your frustrated he was probably crying for an hour after losing you lol... Anyhow it sounds like you had a bit of an adrenaline rush, and I'd encourage you to keep playing in open, most people are pretty cool (assuming you actually bump into someone), and just make sure you have enough credits for the rebuy.

Even if you play at prime time UK or US you probably won't get into the same instance as US or UK players.

Sometimes I get into SC of a CG system and it's full of CMDRs (trying to interdict everybody) and the next time, 10 minutes later, the system is empty. Instancing…

Yeah I've found it the same. Being in Australia I just don't get instanced with many form around the world. Somewhat kills the mmo feel of it :(

I have though about using a vpn to see if i an connect with the US or UK/EU players but :effort:

I play most of my time in open, often in popular systems and CGs. In 1400 hours, got blowed up twice (once in a ship once in an SRV). Meh. Always fly with rebuy. You escaped, so good job.

if its incendiary MC or lasers (most used by PvP) then you need thermal resistent shields, and SCBs with a combo of heavy duty and resistence.
