First exploration trip..

I began my first exploration expedition on boxing day.. and must say it's a lot more enjoyable than I imagined it would be :)

One question tho'.. How do I tell if a planet I've scanned can be terraformed?

It will say "this planet is a candidate for terraforming" in the system map's planet description. Note that you need to perform a detailed surface scan to find this out.

First of all: Good Luck :)
Secondly: take screen shots and share them. We like screenshots here :)
Thirdly: Just keep going... the black calls... ;)

Thanks.. the question is.. for how long?

How long is a piece of string?...entirely up to each explorer. Some commanders can only take a few days, some weeks and some months out in the black. After my last exploration finished I was in the bubble for a couple of days and couldn't take it...had to head back out!

Judging from my own meager experiences - don't plan on anything.

I set myself a goal of where I wanted to go (Crab Nebula), found a few also interesting things on the way (slight understatement, though no ELW yet), tried to speed up occasionally since I wanted to get the funds for an Asp, and am now just about thinking how _much_ there is out there. I've stopped scanning the pink snowballs in the brown dward fields, and just got the first sight of the Jellyfish nebula in SC.

Then, when jumping through the brown dwarfs, you think you're the first person to get there - and as soon as you reach a moderately interesting (i.e. _not_ a brown dwarf) star, you find out that everyone and their dog have been there before.

I'll see what state my ship is in when I reach the Crab nebula and decide from there where to go on - but I'm still set on that Asp, explorer or scout, just for the cockpit view. As for the time it'll take me - I now averaged 1000...1500 ly/week, so another 4 weeks to get to Crab (maybe). Buckyballing it should be doable under a day (judging from the A* results), but where's the fun in that <duck>?

Journeys take as long as you want them to take. You can travel or you can explore or you can do any combination dependant on your mood / goal / ship stare etc. I'm currently in fast travel mode as I want to get back from 65k journey and requip or replace my Asp. The absolute priority is to
enjoy yourself :)

Like this? :)

Found this in the last system I visited today..Water world with metal rich rings + "active-water-based chemistry" and "carbon-water-based life".. unfortunately not a terraform candidate, but do the other things add to it's value?

I dont think they do; you get a higher payout for a terraformable WW but all others have the same value (plus any first discovered bonus)

No. But WW values do seem to vary quite considerably (much more so than other worlds), so there may be a factor there I have not spotted.

I'm finding exploration is addictive. I played for a long time sticking to the Bubble, at least partly because that was all I could reach until I built up the funds for something that could jump properly outside it. Then I made my first tentative circuit to Rigel via Betelgeuse and taking in Mintaka... A trip up to the heights above Spica followed giving me the funds for a properly equipped Asp. At the time those felt like long trips without any reward until the end, so risky and a bit odd. Just a way to make money. But now I'm on my way to the centre of the Galaxy and I'm learning what the REAL scale of this game is... Everything before seems like peanuts and I'm beginning to see why explorers like it out in the black. It's just you and the stars and no one to blame but yourself if you screw up. At first I was longing to get back to civilisation. Now the thought of the "crowd" in the Bubble scares me a bit. I think I may have got the exploration bug...

Day five of the exploration vessel Willy-May Kit's maiden voyage and I am still surprised at the thrill I get when opening the system map to see something like this:

Also today I have come to the realisation that sometimes the much overlooked is often the most beautiful, gotta love a good moon :)

Day 7 of the expedition and I am mid-way thru my outward journey, some 8.5k ly from Sol..
Have only seen 2 systems with first discovered tags in the last 6-7k lys :)
Have found 2 Ammonia Worlds and numerous water worlds today, including this ringed terraform candidate:

Day 7 was a good day :)

(I have developed a nagging feeling that someone is either behind or ahead of me picking up my first discovereds and will be returning their data before my return. Is this normal?)

Yep, standard paranoia - goes away after a while when you realise that you cant go back to the bubble after every discovery (some people look at maths and reckon that once you're off beaten track its statistically unlikely someone else will tag 'your' system so what the heck)..
