A few weeks ago I happened to be travelling across the bubble and ended up with a puzzling first discovery of a system deep in the bubble. As expected this turned out to be server glitch but it did get me to thinking about exploration. This coupled with the knowledge that I would need Palin sooner or later for higher grade thrusters on my current Anaconda and eventual Cutter led me to pull my Asp out of long term storage. Some cheaper modules, a little engineer tinkering, a fuel scoop worth five times the cost of the ship itself and I have an explorer:
One Jump Ahead
The shakedown cruise was 99% successful. The 1% I will say is learning to not attempt repairs on your thrusters whilst in Super cruise. Lesson Learnt.
The ultimate question: Where to go?
More on a whim than any real specific desire I choose to head towards the Cats Paw Nebula, approximately 5400 light years away. From there it was a 1500 light year hop across to the Lagoon Nebulae and then the return to the bubble, a third leg of 4400 light years.
Hours upon hours of flight time, bouncing from system to system, investigating those interesting looking planetoids that are 400,000 light seconds away – just because.
Finally docking back into Baker Terminal after days away was a strange experience culminating with the brain kick of “Yup, landing gear. That’s a thing again.”
My thoughts on exploration.
There are some incredible visuals out there just waiting to be found.
Exploring the unknown is a completely different experience than flying around the bubble.
The Yay moment of finding an Earth Type World. The awwhh moment of realisation that it had already been discovered.
A terrestrial water world and terrestrial ammonia world in the same system.
A ringed water world.
The strange feeling on getting an Unidentified Signal Source several thousand light years from the bubble that just has to be investigated. This was a large discovery cache that I could not collect due to zero cargo space.
24 Million Profit and an exploration rank.
Exploration in Elite Dangerous is not for everyone but definitely for this someone.
Fly safe Commanders.
