First impressions - needs a tutorial and a relatively safe point to start from

Just started with the game today and after some major fiddling about I am now getting the hang of things with the 360 pad and keyboard. This has not been my biggest hurdle to starting the game however - the limited ability to trade with a 4 unit of cargo ship and 1000cr is one factor, the other has been some idiot player sat outside the starting station gunning people down as soon as they get out of the no-fire zone.

I am looking forward to the pvp in this game but seriously - what on earth is someone getting out of doing this other than pure griefing? There's no real loot or fame to gain from shooting starter ships just popping outside of the first station, surely there should be some form of police/military presence outside. Without lack of tutorials it takes a fair while to figure out how to play and the controls need some major learning, individuals like this are just ruining initial impressions.

I played eve for years, did my fair share of pvp but you did not get killed in a couple of shots exiting your first station. I am not asking for hand-holding throughout the game, but you do need a little chance to learn the basics. :D

Wjen you played Eve was it the full game or the early access beta?

This is a beta, its unfinished, law enforcement are yet to be added, as are proper laws and a proper no fire zone.

tutorials are worthless now, as the game is not even in the beta and all that is now is still under construction and to be determined, tweaked, changed, so tutorials will be outdated in a month.

when game will enter gamma phase later this year tutorials will pop up on the web ;)

I agree a good tutorial is important, but it probably isn't a good idea to implement it until the features it's supposed to teach new players have been implemented and aren't in a state of flux. So maybe near the end of beta.

ehehhe :D

I think everyone agrees with the points you raised, but, ofc, it is still a game being built. Next patch will make "new players griefers" life much harder (probably) by including security forces.

Meanwhile, do not overlook the single player missions as a way to learn how the controls and ship handling work.

I do believe that the single player scenarios could use a small update for the Beta/Gamma, including system traveling and docking. But, as other have referred, we can only count with more extensive walkthroughs for commercial release.

These kinds of reports of n00bs getting popped right outside of stations has me worried. The longer we go without policing and bounty system, the more hostile the playerbase will become towards PvP.

I just hope that such features are introduced sooner rather than later, and that the damage to PvP reputation won't be irrepareable, turning people away from PvP before they even have a chance to try true PvP.

Now outing one's self as a PvP player on forums turns him into literal Hitler immediately. Current poor game mechanics are not helpful changing that notion.

I realise that the game is a beta and I am not asking for a full tutorial now, I was pointing out that due to there not being a tutorial at the moment the learning curve is steep - I do expect that.

My main issue was the lack of any basic area to practice / become accustomed to the controls - initially you really need to find out what does what and have chance to remap controls. Would it really take much to have one haven system with a large no-fire zone around a station where weapons cannot be deployed at all?

I have gotten to the point now where I can avoid most overwhelming skirmishes until I make some money but I still think that a starter area is a good idea and would take much less implementation than a full blown tutorial. As the game goes into more public forms of beta test the number of players will swell (and rightfully so the game is living up to expectations and showing great potential so far) and this aspect of the game will become a bigger issue.

Just something to think about, will certainly not stop me playing.

Policing is coming at the end of the month with the release of the next beta. See the latest newsletter for more information. http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=ddf8da5f8b

Welcome to the game and the forums.
Only suggestion I can give u is to do the first combat mission to destroy canisters over and over. reason,,, You can put up your controls, and learn how to manoeuvre the craft.
Then jump into multiplayer. learn how to dock etc.

Thos single player missions is not the best to use as a tutorial as they are real hard even for experienced players,
Thos missions was the first game play we had in alpha and they are not the easiest one to master.

Welcome!

If a new player posts in the "Introductions" section, they get handed some initial pointers by Inaeem, like this example.

Don't worry too much about silly station campers. This beta stage is completely Wild West at present. :) Sensible mechanics are inbound...

PvPers have nobody but themselves to blame for their bad reputation and for people preferring to play in PvE environments in MMOs.

The entire problem with PvP is a subset of the PvP enthusiasts.

If the problem is a "subset", then it can't be true that "PvPers have nobody but themselves to blame for their bad reputation," (since that implies all PvP'ers).

Just to further complicate the issue, some of us like to PvP some of the time and PvE at others.

Generalizations like this might express some kind of frustration you have with the game/other games, but do not do so very eloquently. Could you make a more specific point?

You make good points that I believe are already covered in the next build, except maybe a tutorial, haven't heard anything official about that.

Supposed to be a "huge" release, which we all assume means content as opposed to influx of new players and the last news letter addressed the policing directly.

Good times await! :D

As recommended, start with the solo missions, but don't worry about finishing them all (in some ways they are harder than multiplayer). Just get the hang of flying and basic combat with FA on, then jump into the multiplayer build. I'd recommend a combat strategy of running fast and far to escape encounters at the start.
