Due to work commitments I've finally been able to look at the (Beta ?) official release of Odyssey. Sadly it is increasingly looking exactly how I feared it would after the rushed release while so much was still needing to be resolved. Here are just my initial findings.
1) Even the main menu selection screen shows a stock sidewinder not my current ship (this wasn't even a bug in the Alpha)
2) Still crashes when selling/trading with Bartender in stations with same error code (Wasn't there a two week shutdown period for resolving exactly this sort of issue?)
3) Fleet Carriers restricted, don't have one/don't want one so not a personal problem, due to implementation issues (After incorporating into the Alpha to find/resolve exactly this sort if issue)
4) missions with a six hour timescale having a 44,000 ly journey (Colonia there and back) for 160,000 credits, Seriously!!!!
5) Use of auto land on the ridiculuosly rocky terrain almost caused fatal crash as ship accelerated into surface repeatedly trying to bury itself.
6) Error message when handing in completed missions (Failed to communicate with server) Also not seen before in Alpha (cannot be the only one)
Not yet tried missions that had problems during the Alpha but I'm not expecting any improvement there either. I really enjoyed the initial trials but considered that the timescale was rushed and fixes to bugs were not tested correctly in a working public program (Isn't that the whole point of a public Alpha release?) leaving users hoping that they are working correctly when officially released which doesn't appear to be the case.
Lesson learnt though as any future upgrades/ releases will not have the benefit of my input as , along with many others who pre-ordered, issues reported (in some cases repeatedly as the problems were major) have still not been addressed before release.
During the Alpha the forum was full of messages regarding the timescale given being too long and we now have a release with almost daily 'hotfixes' to resolve issues that should have been sorted out during testing. Not, some will say, any different to most releases these days but it saddens me that a program/ game I have followed and enjoyed since the first Elite in 1984 now suffers from a rushed release to accomodate the mass player base (some even considered the Alpha to be a playable game and complained when they 'lost' upgraded weapons/suits after a major update).
It would seem that it will be quite a while until this update has the stability the paying public expect, personally I'm considering returning to deep space exploration until it is.
