First Impressions using CV1

Just got the CV 1 yesterday and spent a few hours testing it.

Hardware:
i7-4790K 4.1-4.5 GHZ OC
32 GB DDr3
Nvidia GTX 980 4GB

Just wanted to do a short write up of my first experience using the CV1.

Firstly the install for elite was very easy, Just downloaded the default occulus software, started elite, select HMD from 3d setting, Boom it works.

Secondly, wow.
Ive heard alot about how you finally perceive the sense of scale, but i was shocked to see just how big some of the cockpits were. The anaconda bridge is bigger than my apartment. And sitting in the ASP cockpit almost gave me vertigo
It was a Joy to do some dog fighting, and i genuinely ducked when going through the mailslot, felt like i was about to shave a few inches of the top of my skull.

Have not tried to optimize the settings in any way yet, still need to figure out how to do the Supersampling trick many are raving about to make the text abit clearer.
Did not notice too many framedrops as of yet, although on planet surfaces i did notice a small decrease in responsiveness, not very extreme though, still playable.

For the first few hours, i was extremely pleased with the experience, and cant wait to test some more things.

Next things to try:

SRV
Systems inside nebulae
White dwarf jets
Resolution/Setting optimization to make it clearer/sharper

*EDIT, ah darn, meant to post it in the VR forum, would a kind mod please move to the correct Forum?, apologies*

Then welcome to the "new" Elite in VR!

Even with thousand of play hours - when I started Elite in VR, the first hours was like I played for the very first time. Many simple things appears like little wonders to me. While playing CQC, I was close to get a heart attack!

For the resolution, try the ED Profiler. Easy to go and to change! Link:

OOOH yes, i must try CQC
Yes, even simple things like boosting out the mailslot just feel brand new :D

Kudos for the link, will try that tonight

Moved to VR forums as requested :)

Also - welcome to the Virtual Reality! Elite is the best game I've tried in VR so far.

You may well find that driving the SRV gives you motion sickness. You can, if you take it slowly and carefully, overcome this.

The reason is (once you think about it) simple to explain. You have one real sense of balance (managed by the inner ears), and one virtual sense of balance (what your eyes see). When they get out of sync it can confuse the brain (and upset the stomach!). If this starts to happen back out of the game and let things settle down (do so as soon as you start to feel queasy, don't try to fight through it). Over time, repeated exposure (carefully managed) will build up the resistance.

I am lucky to not suffer from it . I speed around in my SRV doing crazy stuff all the time. You should have seen me at the Alien Crash site the other day.

But back to the OP. Yep Elite in my CV1 is superb. An amazing experience.

Thanks for the Tips everyone, Am glad to be part of the VR gang :)
Wasn't originally planning on getting one yet, wanted to wait until next year after i upgrade my GPU, but got an offer i just couldn't refuse price- wise ;), No regrets

Now i just need to work on my situational awareness, almost lost a vulture because i was too busy tracking NPC's above me, and forgot to check my shield strength

Welcome to VR!

Probably the best setting for you is the HMD Quality setting under the (+) in 3D options.
With a 980, you'll probably be okay with a 1.25 is other settings are lowered.

Turn off Blur, Depth of field and turn Ambient Occlusion down to Low. Bloom to Medium, and Shadows to low.
This will buy you some performance for the supersampling that HMD Quality gives you.

If ASW is cutting in a lot, you can turn it off by using (Numpad ON) Ctrl Numpad 1. its auto on by default.
