CQC First match in a long while...

Finally got into a match tonight for the first time in almost two years. Managed to get one semi-good match and a couple of seriously lopsided ones before matchmaking dried up.

Completely forgot what was going on with the boosts and my loadout was a CTF setup with all shields and speed, but I still managed to do alright. Didn't realize rapid cannon still had no distributor draw (didn't they fix that?) and kept putting pips in WEP. The CQC GU-97 seems considerably tougher than the main game's SLF variant, but I had forgotten that the CQC variant retained the original lower velocities and just how different the flight model is...took a while to get acclimated.

Reminds me of pre-Engineer combat, back when actual maneuvering dominated and when weapons didn't have six kilometer range. Ah, the nostalgia...definitely makes me feel the optimal top speed of ships for interesting combat at the ED scale is about 300-500m/s, not this 500-800m/s stuff we've got with DD5s on everything. Speaking of customization options, I've always advocated that Engineering be more like the CQC loadout system (in terms of magnitude of adjustments), and this CQC refresher reinforces that opinion.

Anyway, was a good excuse to test the new OBS+NVENC recording at 4K:

After that match it stuck me and the best player from the other team together and it went from a 3v3 to a 2v2; we won the second bout with no deaths on our side. After the last pair of punching bags got sick of matchmaking screwing them over and bailed, I decided to take a break instead of waiting for more players.

CQC could use a manual team switch option, perhaps where the other team has to confirm the changes. The other matches would have been far more interesting with Traegon and I on opposite sides.

I need to find some people to play CTF with...

I really suck, but am willing to learn.

The CQC elites hang around the above server. They are always texting each other as to availability.

Commander Plexus Ironrot is holding a Small Ship Wing PvP Combat competition that prohibits any engineering. Everything is stock or PP sans packhounds and seekers. Preparing for this has been an eye opener as to how much Engineering has affected flying. I never knew how crucial pip management is when flying stock in Open. Engineers have certainly dumbed down particular aspects of flying. Learning stock has only made me appreciate CQC even more. Greater speed is fun, but interminable fights.....forcing specialization..... meh. It reminds of medicine. What public health needs is a greater quality and quantity of primary health givers, not specialists.

My 10 year old canary started singing whilst playing your video; he really likes the sound of the rapid cannon. That weapon has no distributor draw..... do you need any pips in it at all?

:)

The sound is half the reason I use them. They apparently have zero or near zero WEP draw...which I thought was an oversight that had been corrected long ago. I spent the first half of that match diverting a lot of pips to WEP, for no reason.

Rapid Cannons have ZERO distributor draw.. It's easy pips management as you go only from 4-2-0 to 2-4-0.

Downside is low shot speed and experienced CQC players will easly dodge them, so definitely no 1 vs 1 weapon.

They are pretty good vs Eagles and Sideys.. and unsuspecting/busy targets. And they are just fun to use :D

It's sure is a pity this feature gets left in such a sorry state.
I really enjoy CQC but being from Oz there's basically never a match available.

The gradual dumbing down of ship management has brought everyone closer together in terms of attritional capacity which I suppose is an attempt at balance.
Unfortunately it's come at the expense of skill.

The last few additions to the ship suite just compounded the issue farther.
Two pip permaboost capacitor monsters with guns forever but no ancillary agility.
It's all zoom boom and circle jerk in almost every fight.

In response to this a bunch of us play a King of the Ring tournament using SLF's around fixed structures like Sun Tu to replicate CQC in game.
It's the most fun I have in the game now days but hard to schedule.

I hope CQC gets some love soon.

I played my first ever CQC match last night (Deathmatch was the only mode with players) and had a ball, even though matchmaking had me placed against level 50 players (me level 0 - went to level 2!) so it wasn't so much an evenly matched game so much as 'how long before I'm dead' but was great fun!

Never looked at this mode before, now I think I'll spend a little more time playing, not promising to become an ace but will have PvP fun that is totally, stupidly, fun :D More folk should try it, maybe then I'll get matched with slightly less 'God-like' players!

Just a follow-up: @Morbad - forgot to mention your video, I've watched it a couple of times so thanks for sharing it, some nice hints there :)
Now got to level 11 :) Been matched with various skill level players and even won a couple of times! I did get a few games with similarly low-rated players this evening which was strange after playing vets, nice though.

I'm hooked...

Maybe all vets went to TDM ;p

Betcha there was some cussing in the cockpit at around the 9m 19s mark.

SPEED SURGE!

Forgetting the effects of the power ups was more amusing than frustrating.

That hitching in the video around the 3:15 mark is another story. Wasn't in the game and I'm still not sure what caused it in the recording.
