Newcomer / Intro First Post, noob needs help!

Please, some help here..... I have no idea what to do starting out..... I have looked at a couple stations at their BB for missions, but they all seem out of my ability.... I can't find basic stuff. I also started at Trevithick station, I have been to Lawson Orbital, Fairbairn, Oleskiw... with no idea what to do. can you help?

Well the simplist thing is to start trading. Go to the commodities market and buy high supply , lower priced(compared to average) goods. Fly to another system and sell. Buy where you sold and repeat. Choose opposite type systems eg Hi Tech goods to Industry or Agriculture, Agriculture to Hi Tech. You will soon get the idea. The system map for each system shows the stations and what is imported/exported.

While you are at it, play around with your controls and get used to handling your ship.

Sitting around a nav point and killing NPCs made me 100k in less than a half hour, though I did get extremely lucky with a moderately high value ship or two. So if you can fly it halfway decently, you can make some money having more fun than running cargo.

there is a trading based thread in the new comers area as well. I found early on a jaunt in the combat zones was a nice way to get to know my ship and get some combat bounty, I dont know if this approach is now out of reach of a base sidey actually just saw your name cmdr roo..... yes you should have a pm

Buying low and selling high is easy to say, but for a beginner can be a bit bewildering. Prices vary, some goods are hard to get to, some goods give abysmal profits, and not least; how much one can make hauling stuff from A to B in a Sidewinder is very limited. It takes time and experience to get a feel for how it works and gain the ability to sniff out a potentially good deal.

I got a chart however that may help. It gives in general terms what goods are produced and demanded in what economy. How much profit, depends entirely on the local circumstances. Green is produced by, red is demanded by and yellow is both produced and demanded by. Do note that many systems and stations are dual economy. For instance a High-Tech & Refinery station won't have many (if any) Advanced Catalyzers or Resonating Seperators available. And if it does, at a pretty steep price compared to a High-Tech that is not also dabbling in Refining.

Hey captain K....
all the above advice is good but I look at the practical side with specific help: it is easy to say "shoot to kill" or "practice trading" if you have no idea how to do it.

so here goes:
When docked... go to commodities page... in the upper right is a section of galactic values... with a drop down... use to drop down and you will get a list of nearby systems. choose a system, for beginners.. 1 jump away. Now scroll the items list.. look for "EXPORTED TO"... these are items that are traded regularly..... some will have nothing available.. that is ok.. keep looking... try to find the higher priced items... you get more return in profit. I find that minerals and stuff like that can turn a fair profit: 150-200 credits per ton. I know: people will scoff when they read this... this guy is a penny ante guy BUT for a beginner.. it is a place to start. to find a 1 jump system... use the galaxy map.

then launch, go to the planet... find a station. (warning.. as time goes on.. you will find multiple choices.. some will not have commodities
listed when you dock... relaunch to another local station... you will be able to trade your goods but it takes time to figure out the good stations.
go to commodities page and sell your goods. Do not worry if you don't make a million ... this is a starting point for a solid future of trading.
keep an eye on the BB... if you find a LIGHT CARGO mission within a 1 jump range... see if how much it will take out of your cargo hold.
then go through the commodities..decline offer for now.. find what is exported to that station and fill up to the point of being full when you add the mission load then go back and accept the offer.
This way you get a guaranteed profit and more when you sell your goods.
Launch... go to the station... land... go to the BB... find the light cargo mission message and open it up. you will find a compliment to your timely arrival and a box to give cargo. click on the box and you get paid. as time goes on.. you will stat to get a reputation and that will flash up to let you know how you are doing. then close out the message and sell your other goods.
repeat and perform and soon you will get the hang of trading and will start to venture out onto other missions and planets that are more than 1 jump away. Good luck Trader.

Have you done the training ?

The combat training missions (riight above start in the main menu) will teach you basic flight maneuvers, combat, docking and taking off. If you want to get your first bit of cash by killing stuff, it's an absolute must.

Once you've done a few of the combat training missions, you'll be in a good position to head to a nav beacon. Note that the training enemies are tougher than in-game (or were last time I heard), so don't feel like you have to beat "incursion" before taking on in-game combat.

Check my sig for a FAQ for Beginners.

Just remember, most cargo floating in space will be considered stolen, which can result in a fine or bounty on your head if you're scanned (except for anarchies, where there is no government). Also keep in mind that this game punishes death; in every ship except your Sidewinder, you will have to rebuy your ship if you are destroyed. You only have to pay a fraction of the total cost of your ship and its components, but you got to make sure you have enough money to cover your insurance rebuy. That info is available in the UI panel in the right side of your cockpit (just look right and it should pop up).

Finally, if you enter a conflict zone remember to choose a faction. To do this, just go to the UI panel in the right side of your cockpit, and go the the last tab. You should see a Faction option, and this is where you choose a faction in a conflict zone.

Enjoy and feel free to always ask questions :D
