First steps...

Hello all

Just taken my first steps into the game after upgrading to Premium Beta.
It's glorious!! :)

A couple of things though...

My view seems to be somehow zoomed in a bit. For example on the left of the screen all I can see is 'diction' of 'Jurisdiction'.
I've tried adjusting the fov and that doesn't help much.
I notice when I press the pinkie switch on my x52 it zooms out to the correct level - seemingly in anticipation of looking to the side panels - but only while the button is pressed.
I'm playing at 1920x1200.
Any ideas folks???

Secondly, I can't work out how to headlook using my x52 (which I have selected as the controller in the menu). How do I look around???

Thanks folks!

Click the rotary wheel on the throttle (the grey one under your left index finger), and use the stick POV hat at the same time.

Can't help, but congrats on the access.

Just a note: It may get more help re the x52 if you have that keyword in the thread title.

I can't find it, but I am sure there's a cute picture of the x52 layout somewhere about.

Hi, it sounds like you've hit the well known 16x10 problem... Try a 16x9 resolution instead :)

Thanks folks!
Re the x52 - yep that sorted it! Don't know how I missed that.

As for the 'sort of zoomed' problem, yep, switching to 16:9 does help (though it makes everything slightly narrow)!

Thanks very much!

I asked elsewhere about the 16:10 problem elsewhere but I got the impression it had been solved. Has there been any word as to if this problem is being looked at, and if so, when might it be resolved?

Ta folks. :)

Sounds to me like you are in 'radar window' view (2)
Try hitting "2" again. It's a toggle so try twice or thrice! ;)

Or whatever you set that middle menu to on controller

Odd. I'm running at 1080 and I also have that odd "zoom" with parts of the hud on left and right being cut off. It got a bit better when I maxed out FOV but still there.

It just might have been solved in newer builds. Remember, this is alpha 1 we've been given access to, it's missing any tweak made in alpha 2 and 3.

Now, maybe not quite so first steps... How do you handle that Anaconda? I die in seconds if I get in weapons range :p

Hehe! Haven't even tried facing the Anaconda yet - taking baby steps y'know.

Anyway with help I figured out headlook on the x52.

But I notice a couple of odd things.
The pinkie controller does nothing unless I have the x52 control panel open in the background (I remember reading about this quirk a while ago I think)
More significantly, the top left hat on the stick doesn't seem to cycle though targets.. or do anything. Am I missing something obvious again?

Thanks one and all. :)

I don't have an x52, but this may help

The pinky switch is a shift button, it shifts all of the buttons to an alternate mapping. If you want the pinky switch to act like a button, you have to modify the profile and remove the shift button configurations from it.

I can't recall exactly where the options are, since I'm not home right now to see it, but I will try my best. In the profile editor, in the tab where you configure the controls for your joystick, normally you will see a picture of the joystick on the left and one list of mapped controls on the right. There is an option somewhere at the top that allows you to see all of the mapped controls in a grid view. From there, you should see some columns that are labelled "Shift + Mode", or maybe "Pinky Shift + Mode", delete those columns. Save and apply your profile and the pinky button should behave like a normal button now.

The other button that you may want to change is the Clutch button. This is found on your throttle stick on the lower rotary control. To make this button behave like a normal button press, go to the saitek control panel for the joystick, one of the options found there is to disable the clutch.

Don't open up at range. When you do open up, let your wingmen worry about the fighters.

Slot in close - directly behind the Big Score's engines. Stay there no matter what (i.e. use vertical thrusters to go down if she starts to pitch up - you really want to stay out of the line of sight of the beam turret). Spam missiles like there's no tomorrow. Oh, 3 pips to SYS, 3 to WEPs and 1 to ENG seems a good power balance when you're in the groove. :)

If you get to be a good pilot - Flight Assist off and circle strafe. In the multiplayer elements that you will eventually have fun with, auto-cannons have a greater standoff range than the 'condas beam turret.

Wow... Well, that made things a lot easier, kind of laughably so :p

Don't want to get killed by the beam turret? Don't give it a chance to hit you. Basically. Feels a bit cheap but oh well :p

Will definitely be practising flight assist off at some point, right now it mostly feels like I end up tumbling around helplessly in it...

Now a different question in controls under Targeting there is "Gunsight System" with "Traditional" and "Trail From Center" as options. What's this? I've tried both but can't figure out what they do...

EDIT: Oh, and does anyone know where keybinds are saved? Would love to be able to make a copy of my current Joystick + keyboard bindings and then experiment with other controls. Look in install folder and in the Elite folder in %appdata% but couldn't find anything that was obviously containing keybinds.
