First time exploration trip, Professor Palin Unlock

I've never been more than a couple of hundred light years away from the starting system as I've been a purely combat pilot. I really want to unlock professor palin which requires 5k light years so I thought I should make it my first exploration trip with an aspx I got (45ly jump range).

Using the map in VR is a pain and got no clue where to go. Can someone please give me a pointer or even a destination system? Would like to visit a thargoid base too on the way if that's possible, I haven't seen one yet. 5-6k light years as I don't even know if I'll enjoy myself out here.

bubble nebula is a safe bet if its just the distance you want, without too many detours. just typing in "bubble nebula" gives you a rough direction.

I've just undertaken a similar journey, and so far it's been great. Only got around 38ly (can't be bothered grinding for the next level of FSD upgrade from Felicity), but i knocked off the first 1000ly in less than an hour. Headed to the California nebula first and stopped off at Mic Turner Base. Planning next leg at work tonight, but intend to take in the JellyFish (cos come on, great name!) and end at the Rosette Nebula, which is just over 5000ly. I'm told there's a rather lovely asteroid base in there somewhere, but spared myself the spoiler so i can go looking for it!

I'll second the suggestion to head to the bubble nebulae. That and Veil West have amazing views and make for excellent screen shots. The bubble nebulae has the advantage of planets to land on within the nebulae so you may want to clear some hard drive space :)

Veil West is my favourite nebula visually. It's nowhere near 5k from the bubble but definitely worth checking out on your way there or back again.

It just looks like a big piece of nougat in space and I want to eat it...
