Flight sim experience may not necessarily help very much in space sim.
In Elite Dangerous I can easily dump direction of flight and change fire arc on the fly by suddenly dumping flight assist, or I can use thrusters to strafe or move vertically to shake the attacker. In flight sims you don't have those luxuries.
