First time open play tonight

I have decided to give open play a first airing tonight, leaving from Shinrarta. To txt chat other players is it just target them and press enter

Midly excited and worried in equal amounts..... Be nice, Commander Grant

You can also pick commanders in range from the comms menu, default key is 2 and then navigate the list that appears at the side (which only shows if there are commanders in your instance).

99.9pct of players in open are harmless. If you don't want to be pirated or murdered just stay away from starter systems, major trade hubs in popular systems or known player-concentrated space. It's easy to avoid the bad guys in ED.

This.....

I wouldn't be so optimistic. I did play in open before and didn't have any problems until I got near Shinrarta and was interdicted 3 times in 5 minutes and was nearly destroyed for no reason at all. Good luck to you out there.

I've played 50 / 50 open / Group and I've never been inderdicted or "griefed" by a player. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe others are not but most of the folk I happen across seem like decent fellows.

I agree with Ophion, been interdicted by lone-wolf pirates in all sorts of places and shot up for no demand. I imagine it is a more regular occurrence in high pop system/core.

amen to that. i'll only go exploring in open; for regular BH and missions i'll stick to private groups. i've got too much to lose just to gratify some 14 year old's lust to wreck everyone for jollies

Remember you are playing a game and not actually loosing anything.
Besides, remember your insurance and you are back in the cockpit in seconds.

Finally, get to know your ship. Thats the key to survival. Too many fly with docking computers and forget to learn the basics of flight.

I went to Lincoln for the event last week in my Eagle, and normally I'm never in Open, but I went in open for the event, and it was lots of fun...

Then I flew back to Shinrarta in open (I forgot I was in open), and as I arrived in Shinrarta I saw a player in the system, so I swung round to target them and say hi (as I'm used to doing whenever I see a player in Mobius), and they initiated a hypserspace jump from half way to the station and jumped out to another system. That's when I realised how paranoid people are in Open around high-traffic systems. :)

Lave and the places around it are pretty busy with CMDRs. Most of the time I just saw them whiz past.
I saw a lone T6 in supercruise around one of the nearby systems and briefly considered interdicting him and stealing his cargo, but then I remembered I don't have an interdictor and I'm not a pirate, so I moved on.

I must agree with Whiterose. I've yet to have any negative interaction with any Commanders doing business in Imperial space.

Same here - I don't see many CMDRs in empire space and if I do, everyone (including me) usually minds his own business.

Was interdicted and shot down once, but never was "griefed".

I've never been interdicted by PC's that much. The only time it happened repeatedly was in the latest Beta when a player in a Python kept pulling my Asp out of SC. After the third go I simply texted 'Can I help you' and he explained that he was testing how much they'd nerfed the Python and not very impressed that it could no longer catch it's prey after interdiction.

Mr Vorhees from the Galactic Milieu? Now in orbit above Earth having fought valiantly against the Tanu?

I am enjoying Open, but avoiding Alliance space. They are mean over there.

Errrr, perhaps the better choice would have been not to announce that, even less so with mentioning your current location. :D

I just had a very nice conversation with a CMDR in a Type 7 who asked me about my Adder. He was super pleasant and very friendly.

In the same play session about an hour or so later, I was interdicted by a CMDR in an Eagle. My adder is unarmed and solely used for exploration. When I told him that he still tried to kill me. I told him to scan me and take a look for himself, but no, he wanted to have a go. Being unarmed, I did the only thing I could think of - took aim right at his ship and used it like a battering ram. Both of our shields went down, but he took about 25% hull damage and I immediately left without a scratch :)
