first time OR user, first timers problems.

Hey guys.

Got my DK2s today and to say i am impressed is an understatement. i have run a few demos and it is amazing i can't describe the squeals the wife was letting out with the riftcoaster demo.
But the real reason i got the DK2s was to play ED.
So to my issues.
First off, direct HMD access from apps works with some of the demo's but not others.
When i try to switch to extend desktop to HMD the OR and and tracker seem to switch off.
when i go into the computers graphic properties it doesn't show as a second monitor and i cant seem to find it.
When i open ER i cant find any mention of the OR
Its only day one for me so i know i have a lot of tinkering to do but i would like to get tinkering in ED.

I am running win 8.1 pro 64bit
intel i7-4910MQ 2.90 GHz
AMD R9 m290x
16gb ram
256gb ssd drive

runtime 0.5.0.1

Thanks for any help given.

Is it connected via HDMI? Try using the DVI adapter - I had all sorts of weirdness otherwise. Also, if you are running multi monitor, disable that before turning on the Rift, at least until you've got it all setup.

Rift settings are in Elite - Graphics - 3D

I had this problem when I switched to 0.5 runtime. change which monitor is your default monitor . If your second monitor is not showing in extended mode its because your using a laptop and need to change the video output settings for the external monitor port / hdmi /oculus rift. hold the function button down and look for a key on your top numbers that show a symbol for the monitor. Once the second monitor is visible under prosperities change the default monitor and reboot the oculus services.

Hey guys.

My laptop doesn't have a DVI port but it does have a mini display port so i will try that.
I will check the settings in elite but can you still play elite on the OR in Direct HMD access mode.?
I will check out the option in game for the OR unfortunately i'm at work so it will have to be tonight.( this work carry on really messes with your personal life):D

This just sounds like the kind of thing that happens from time to time to me. Usually any combination of restarting service, reinstalling oculus runtime, removing+connecting all cables (including doing so directly on the rift itself - this often works when the computer end didn't) seems to fix it.

Start doing the above in order and I'm sure you'll get it going.

ED only works in extended mode, so don't bother doing it any other way. Also, make sure you are running 0.5, as 0.6+ is full of issues.

and 0.7 is right around the corner, to further confuse things :)

but ya this is typical stuff everyone goes through, OR is not an easy feat to optimize.
Your also on a laptop which im sure makes things more annoying.

Good Morning guys.
Well spent quite a while last night trying to get it setup without success but there are improvements.
I was able to get the extend desktop to HMD working which I was very happy about.(thanks to you guys for the pointers)
I managed to get the rift setup at 75Hz.
I was able to view elite through the rift after a lot of messing about with rotation of the screen position of the screen. I also had to take out the lenses so I could look at what was on the screen of the rift.
I finally got elite playing on screen “BOOM” no tracking “UN-BOOM”also the writing in game was ineligible but I think I had the in game resolution set wrong for some reason.
I looked at the forums and deleted from the running processes the recommended programs Msscript and some config program I can’t remember the names exactly now, but still no tracking.
I will be spending the whole afternoon on this as I have ahalf day from work :D so hopefully CMDR Foosty1 will be flying around the burnt wreckage of wanted criminals tonight in my new virtual cobra.
See you in the 3D black “hopefully”

The way I've got mine set up is that I run my Rift in Extended Mode as the primary monitor. When I switch on my Rift my main monitor is disabled. This does make it a pain to launch the game, but I have set a shortcut key for the Elite Launcher. A few presses of the "enter" key and the game starts. The Oculus Configuration Utility has also been set with a shortcut key in case I need to restart the service.

So a stupid question for you Frank.
I take it when you switch off your rift you go back to normal?
I had a hell of a time with the screen being on the rift and nothing on the laptop last night thats why i took the lenses out of the rift so i could see what was happening on screen.

Have you read and followed the instructions of the detailed setup post that pinned at the top of the forums and if so what parts of it are not working for you? and what are the specs of your laptop? and have you checked the other pinned post getting the best dk2 experiance?

It's certainly not a daft question <grin> I click the switch on the top right of my headset and my Windows 8 automatically throws the image back onto my normal display. I do have to click the headset back on before selecting the "play" gadget on the launcher window.

I also had a hell of a time setting up the display. It had to be done through the Oculus itself. I didn't take out the lenses, but I had to do a lot of peering through the lenses and memorising button presses to do the job. But it all works now <nervous grin>.

Note than not everybody have problems with Runtime 0.6.0.1. I use it successfully with all demos and ED and have no problem at all.

Ok here goes again guys.

I am finally getting the elite game on screen with both the rift and tracker working.
I have been follwing all beginners guide from day one but they just dont seem to be working on my system.
Now i have the game on screen my issue is that i see a split screen and the picture is in landscape and not portrait.
In my graphics settings the display is set at portrait and everything looks correct.

Any ideas?

Foosty

in the graphics settings in elite dangerous go to where it says 3d. select oculus rift. click apply

- - - Updated - - -

also check the resolution in elite dangerous once oculus is selected in 3d and make sure it says 1920 x 1080 75 mhz

Hey Iced01

In the elite setup i have it set at
Monitor secondary
res at 1920 x 1080
75hz
3d set at oculus rift headphones

in windows i have

windows primary desktop set as 1
rift DK2 set as 2
2 set to portrait 75hz and 1920 x 1080
i have 1 and 2 set to extend these displays

i have tried runtime 0.05 and 0.06 currently back on 0.05.

When i apply these settings in ed all i can see is a split screen on the horizontal that looks a little 3Dish i.e 3 coulours not quite syncing but it is the elite startup screen.

running out of ideas, any help or suggestions more than welcome.

with the rift set to extended mode and turned on open your display prosperities on your desktop. Make sure the rift is selected as the primary display and your laptop internal display as the secondary in extended mode. click apply. open elite. in graphics tell it to use display 1 not the second o ne.

Tried what you said but no joy.
I got bored trying last night and gave up.
been looking at some demos today and i seem to be able to run some demos and not other.
and some show up the same as ed does in split screen and a bit funky looking.
I'm not sure what to do now but i'm going to kep on tinkering to se if i can get it to work properly.
the biggest bummer is i had it working just without the tracker now i have the tracker working in both modes but no ED.

Foosty1

you know it will work properly if you have the oculus app open and the rift on in extended mode and it is able to identify the head unit and tracker unit in the oculus app. it will identify the oculus rift and turn on the motion tracking camera inside the oculus app when the unit is turned on and working correctly

My next suggestion isn't going to work with your set up. I was going to say that you could try just having the Rift as the only display device by switching off your monitor. That isn't so easy with a laptop.

If you are getting to the end of your tether, it might be worthwhile considering borrowing a desktop machine to try it on... I guess.

Gonna try the desktop method Frank.
My son has a semi decent speceed machine that i will try it on.
I will update when i've tried it.

Thanks for the help guys.
