First to scan a star

This weekend I bit the bullet, set a course for the centre of the galaxy and went exploring.

After a little over 300 LY travelled I came across a binary star system with one star listed as explored by >CMDR's NAME< and the second start listed as not explored. So I went looking for the companion star and have scanned it. The star now has a name in the System Map and - unlike the primary - does not have a "Discovered by" label. Is there anything else I need to be doing? I'm not keen on the idea of turning around and going back to a station to sell the data but am starting to think I might have to...

If it doesn't have a discovered by tag, that means it is still open to be claimed for discovery by you. You just need to sell the data before anyone else does.

More "First *recorded* discovery by".

Like Colombus getting all the credit for N. America for centuries...

Aye, you've got to get back to base in one piece to sell the data first.
Just gotten back from an exploration run myself, it was quite a buzz seeing a list of congratulations messages from Universal Cartography that I'd been the first to bring back data on quite a few of the systems. Pays extra credits in bonuses too....

Also make sure you got a Surface Scanner. You got to surface scan and then sell the data to get credit. Due to a bug currently, you still may not show up as the discoverer yet, but Frontier keeps track of discoverer data, I'm sure Frontier will get the discovery tags straightened out soon.

But... by this logic it is possible that somebody else has ALREADY found and sold the data for this system, and thus you MAY not be the first in any event. Keep your fingers crossed!

Three things that came to mind when you are in a system of two stars when one is claimed and one is not. Either:

1. The CMDR did scan the other star but the Discovered by system is still bug and his name is not on it.
2. A typical rushed explorer where he only scan the objects near by and go to the next system where he thinks it is not worth running around.
3. He had a short range discovery scanner and didn't see the other star.

It's like Real Life... its not whether you are the first to find something, its whether you are the first to find something *and* publish the result.

Given the way NPCs like to attack explorers in that 500 ly zone outside the colonized bubble, it is very much Publish or Perish.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I was beginning to think I might have to go back and sell the data.

The only scanner I have is a basic discovery scanner so it looks like a return trip might be in order anyway...

Yes - if you want to do serious exploring, then an advanced discovery scanner and a detailed surface scanner are a must!
You will miss so much otherwise.

Does anyone know if there is a way to see a list of all the placesyou discovered first? I just got back from a 2000ly run and found a large number of systems. You get the list when you get back but it would be nice to see the running list.
