Newcomer / Intro First trade mission.

The mission is to source and deliver 2 performance enhancers and the advice is to examine the "Trade Route Data"
Well, I've looked everywhere for this Data thinking it would give me a clue of where to go and what to do but as yet
I can find no answers.
I have visited several station commodity markets and found the performance enhancers but these particular markets have
none to sell!
Where will I find this Trade Route Data and will it tell me which station in which system where I can buy these enhancers?

I'm doing this from memory so there's going to be some mistakes.

Go to your galaxy map. On one of the tabs you'll get an option to filter the galaxy display. Can't remember what it's called, it's the one that isn't realistic or powerplay. On the filter you select the trade option. You can expand the filter options to specify a specific commodity - you want Performance Enhancers. You'll see a pretty network showing you where performance enhancers are moving to and from. Go to one of the "from" systems and buy some.

Try watching this short youtube video, it should answer a lot of your questions:

You can choose to get this info either in-game or using 3rd party tools/websites.

If you want to do it in-game, this is what I would do:

- Galaxy Map - turn on trade routes.
- then turn on Performance Enhances and filter out everything else.
- within a 20 LY or so radius buy trade data from each system one at a time. You do this from the pop-up from each system (note: you can only buy data when docked). You may already have trade data from those systems you have visited in the last 24 hours so you won't need to buy it again (the pop-up will tell you this). Don't trust any of the trade routes being displayed until you have the trade data - it might be misleading.
- you are looking for a trade route where a system is exporting Performance Enhancers - so look at the direction the trade is flowing in on the trade route line
- there is no way to know which station within that system is selling the commodity unless it is one of the top 3 exports in which case it will be shown on the System map
- another thing to do is to look in the current commodities market and select one system at a time to see if your current system imports that commodity from the other system (remember only do this for systems whose trade data you have). Whilst it's good to start off with as it could be a 'quick win', I wouldn't recommend it as of course it will only work if the commodity you are looking for is imported into your current system.

EDIT: Performance Enhancers are predominantly sold at High Tech systems so check those first.

A crucial piece of advice missing here, IMHO, is that once you have selected your chosen source for said Performance Enhancers, you should look to see if there is anything you can buy where you are now to trade to the place you intend to get your Performance enhancers from. Otherwise you are running empty for half the journey and not maximising your profit. You can do this by clicking the filters on your chosen system to see what reverses, if anything, or by making assumptions based upon economy/ state (or you could just use EDDB to get you started). Some systems you can purchase trade data for which will show you (Not much) whether an item is exported to that location or not......
Once you get there and acquire your PE's also try and take missions which run you back to start point where you are going anyway with them. In this way you can build up a circular relationship of missions in the right systems...

Hmm nice advice Cerberus.
I think I need to start a rather steep learning curve, but I do receive and understand your message.....makes sense logistically.
Thx

I've been finding that the 3rd party tools are often out of date now.
If the station you took the mission has a demand for the commodity you are asked to bring, which it usually does, select the commodity. On the right of the commodity screen will often show the systems where this station imports this commodity from. If you go to one of these systems, you are likely to find the commodities you need.

Yes, they are more out of date than they used to be.....however if you use them to assess implied sourcing and demand you don't usually go wrong - its the exact prices which are usually out of date.

I have no concrete data on this theory, of course, so it's just a feeling:

The 3rd party commodity prices are crowd sourced and community driven. Back when ED was fairly new, these new tools came out and people were excited to contribute. They installed either the OCR or the API updaters to help keep these commodity prices up-to-date. As time goes on, you have the likes of eddb.io and etn.io that puts a nice web interface on top of the data, but doesn't provide a way for users to contribute back. As more data contributing old players drop off (let's be honest, not all old players are around anymore, or space trucking) and new players only being introduced to the nice web interfaces and not providing updated data, the data becomes more and more stale.

So, since this is the Newcomers Forum, I'm going to try to get new players to contribute to the backend data. If you are a regular user of EDDB or other web based trade tools, please consider contributing to the data by using one of the many available tools:

Note that using the ED API requires you to enter in your game username and password. If you are uncomfortable doing that with a third party program, stick to the OCR based programs. They are a little more hassle setup, but afterwards you just have to take some screenshots of the commodity screens.
