In the fuel rats we sometimes see new players, who just purchased and started playing the game, using the legacy version of the game. It's usually pretty clear that they didn't purposefully choose the legacy version, and just installed and launched it without knowing the difference, ie. knowing that there are (essentially) two versions of the game: An old "legacy" version that gets no updates of any kind, and the current "live" version. They just buy the game, install it and launch it, without knowing about any such details.
How and why does that happen? Pretty much invariably it happens because they bought and installed the game from the Epic Store which (for a reason that nobody seems to know nor understand) installs the legacy version of ED by default. And then, when you launch the game, it will launch the ED launcher, which then just proceeds to launch the installed legacy version. These new players are usually none the wiser and don't even know that there's a newer version with updates available.
Could Fdev please fix this problem? It's in their best interest to do so. There are quite many Epic Store users who are purchasing the live version of the game (even Odyssey), yet installing and launching the legacy version without knowing better.
What makes this a hundred times worse is that (as far as I understand it) if you start playing the legacy version, and then weeks or months later you realize (eg. by reading ED forums or other posts) that there's actually a newer version of the game, if you install and run that you'll have to start from complete scratch. Your weeks/months of legacy play will go completely to waste. This is a huge disservice. I wouldn't be surprised if some people have stopped playing the game completely because they didn't want to start over.
