Fixed : Cannot launch elite from Oculus Home

So I will cut to the chase. If you want to read the background info scroll to below the ###### line

Re-instal/install the launcher, this is not the product. Install it to a directory you create because you will delete it once installed and you have checked it works - you can launch elite from in Oculus Home. The purpose is to install all the DLLs you need both from Frontier and Microsoft. None of these DLLs will be installed if you let Oculus home do the instal!

1)Create Folder c:\tempdelete
2) Do not worry about these two steps on the FAQ above

Delete any files from where the launcher was installed. If the following folders exist, delete them:
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch
  • C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products
3) Install the launcher using the link in the FAQ. Remember this is just the launcher not the product and takes <2 mins
4) Re-boot PC
5) Check you can now launch from Oculus Home
6) Delete folder c:\tempdelete
7) Reboot and check again you can still launch.

So the background. I woke up yesterday and the Q key and W key would not work on my keyboard. Cutting a 4 hour story short the issue was some update conflict and I had to re-install windows.

After windows installed my next install was Oculus Home. At this point all my software was available for download in the Library - because I kept my library on a different disk to my operating system. This then kicked off around 8 hours of frustration/googling/frustration, lots of searching and not once did I come across the FAQ above!

Side note: Typical solutions where
1) Set HMD headphones in 3D setting in Elite
2) Edit the frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous.json note the location "D:\games\Oculus\Software\Manifests" and set
"launchParameters": "ED /vr /autoquit",
"launchFile2D": "ORID.exe",
"launchParameters2D": "ED /novr",
3) This step is very confusing! Create a shortcut to the Launcher.exe file that is in the directory D:\games\Oculus\Software\Software\frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous . The file is called Launcher.exe but it is not the Launcher application you are installing through the above steps! Add /vr to the end of the file name i.e.
"D:\games\Oculus\Software\Software\frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous\launcher.exe /vr".
This will work, even if you dont install the launcher above and get all the correct DLLS this is because its not a frontier issue it is an Oculus issue. Many people will stop after searching forums at this point and will never launch ED from Oculus Home. There is nothing wrong with this route its just my OCD wont let me do it :)

####

Now none of these are wrong and will indeed help a bunch of people but when you've done these and still cannot launch then the forums typically run out of help.

If you want to check your issue before you reinstall the launcher.

1) First Try to start Elite through Oculus (yes I know it wont work) - this will populate the error log you are about to go to
2) Then go here: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics

Run OculusLogGatherer.exe
Check the check box for "All"

This will create a zip folder on your desktop, go to your desktop Unzip file
C:\Users\[yourusername]\Desktop\Oculus_Logs_[your computer name]_20191110_073814\Diagnostics\OculusServiceLogs

Open the last file - check the date

Go to the bottom of the file and then work your way up looking for "frontier-developments-plc-elite-dangerous" then search around for an error
mine was this

3221225781/0xc0000135 STATUS_DLL_NOT_FOUND

If you want to google at this point please do and you will see its missing DLLS - says what it does on the tin :)
